Tonight, Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham and the Waukegan City Council presented a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth National Independence Day in Waukegan to The African American Museum at The England Manor and the Juneteenth Lake County IL Committee.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the contributions of African Americans to our community and nation.

We encourage all residents to honor and celebrate Waukegan’s diverse community and join us for the 2026 Juneteenth Lake County Parade & Festival this Saturday, June 20, right here in Waukegan.

The proclamation officially declares June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth National Independence Day in Waukegan.
