This year we are honored to welcome international artist Vieux Farka Touré, born March 12, 1981 in Niafunké, Mali. He is a world-renowned Malian singer, composer, and guitarist and the son of legendary musician Ali Farka Touré.
Despite his father’s early discouragement and his family’s lineage as soldiers, Vieux secretly pursued his passion for music. He later enrolled in the Institut National des Arts in Bamako, Mali, and today is known worldwide for his powerful sound that blends traditional West African music with blues. His music, often sung in French, creates a mesmerizing rhythm that connects cultures around the world.
Why do we do this?
Three years ago, while sitting around sharing ideas on how to bring our community together through music, food, and fun, a vision was born. During Festival International, we asked ourselves: Why not add more flavor to the gumbo?
So we created an event where everyone can gather, celebrate culture, enjoy great music, and taste Creole dishes from Louisiana prepared by local restaurants ready to spice up your taste buds. Inspired by West African culture, you’ll also hear about dishes such as fufu, dibi, jollof rice, and maafe (peanut butter sauce) that are part of Mali’s rich culinary tradition.
