Tom recently caught a swarm in one of our yards and got some amazing shots of the bees "fanning"—exposing their Nasonov glands!

Located on the tip of the abdomen, this gland releases an orientation pheromone that acts as a homing beacon. When swarming or adapting to a new hive location, bees will point their bottoms in the air and fan their wings rapidly to spread the scent, guiding the rest of the colony safely home.
