We’re honored to welcome Dr. John Farnsworth for our Saturday keynote presentation, “Becoming a Better Birder.”

Dr. Farnsworth is an emeritus faculty member of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Santa Clara University and a resident of Skagit County. He currently serves as Vice Chair of Washington State’s Wildlife Diversity Advisory Council and brings a wonderful blend of scholarship, public service, and deep engagement with the natural world.

He holds degrees from Antioch University, Stanford University, and the University of Stirling (Scotland). His most recent book, Reading Nature: The Evolution of American Nature Writing (2025), explores how Americans have understood and written about the natural world, and his current work-in-progress, Deep Birding: Becoming a Better Birder, inspires this keynote.

This talk invites birders of all levels to think more deeply about how we observe, interpret, and connect with birds—moving beyond identification toward a richer, more meaningful practice.

The countdown is on!! It's Birding Festival Week! We’re excited to kick off our Birding Festival Speaker Series with a presentation by Bryony Angell on Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified coffee, chocolate, and Audubon-supported maple syrup 🐦🍫🍁

This talk is designed for consumers and birders alike—explaining how to identify legitimate eco-certifications, why terms like “natural” and “shade grown” can be misleading, and where to find truly Bird Friendly products in the marketplace. Many people are surprised to learn that Bird Friendly certification extends beyond coffee to include chocolate and maple syrup.

As a member of the Smithsonian Bird Friendly Coalition, Bryony’s presentation is endorsed by the Smithsonian’s marketing team and fills a critical gap in Bird Friendly programming: consumer awareness.

Hello Birding Friends!! We've added an exciting excursion before both Saturday and Sunday's Maple Hall activities. Below is the information - and we're over the moon to have Jeff Birek join us again this year!

Wiley Slough Morning Bird Walk

Join festival keynote speaker Jeff Birek, professional ornithologist and founder of Pteravia, for an intimate morning bird walk through the rich wetlands of Wiley Slough. This relaxed, small-group outing will focus on sharpening observation skills while exploring one of the Skagit Valley’s most productive birding areas, where waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds converge in a dynamic mosaic of habitats.

Jeff brings decades of field experience and a teaching style that emphasizes learning how to bird—reading habitat and behavior in the field—making this walk both engaging and insightful.

Saw a large group of snowgeese on Calhoun road west of Bubba Rodrique’s memorial and the “S” curves at Fohn Farm field. What a beautiful day in the valley!
