KJDS is honored to have been able to bring the Violins of Hope project to our city, and humbled by its reception. Through the Violins of Hope project 25 schools totaling 4,500 students, an estimated 3,000 gallery visitors, and hundreds of concert-goers had the opportunity to see, feel and hear the compelling stories of resilience, survival and loss that the Violins of Hope carry in their wood and in their strings.
Thank you to the team of volunteers who made this happen spearheaded by Sari Kagan, Finley, Louis Gauci, Larry Tucker, Jeff Becker, Judy Brietstein and Rabbi Yossi Wilhelm.
May we internalize their message!

We are incredibly honored to welcome Avshi Weinstein, co-founder of Violins of Hope, to the exhibit this week! You can meet him at the gallery today 3-6PM and Wednesday from 1 PM – 4 PM.

Together with his late father, Amnon Weinstein, Avshi has spent decades restoring violins that survived the Holocaust, many once played by Jewish musicians during one of history’s darkest times.

What began as Amnon’s personal mission to honor those lost, including members of his own family, has become an international project of remembrance, education, and healing.

📅 Meet Avshi at the Gallery
Today 3-6 PM & Wednesday | 1–4 PM
📍 Digital Motif, Downtown Knoxville

This moving exhibit is in its final days, and tonight, these historic violins will be played one last time in Knoxville.

A violin, a soldier, a legacy.

The Paul Leeser Violin carries the incredible story of a man who escaped N**i Germany, built a new life in America, and returned as a U.S. soldier to help liberate Europe.

After his passing in 1981, his daughter Linda discovered his violin tucked away in a closet, a silent witness to his journey. She later donated it to Violins of Hope, ensuring that its story, like Paul’s, would never be forgotten.

See this historic violin and hear its powerful story at the Violins of Hope exhibit, open through April 9 at Digital Motif.

At the March 5th Violins of Hope concert, we were honored to hear the world premiere of "Four for Gideon" by Michael Schachter, a tribute to the incredible composer Gideon Klein whose music lived on despite the darkness of Terezín.

As Aram Demirjian shared:
"Gideon Klein’s musical voice and creative inspiration, like so many artists imprisoned at Terezín, would not be extinguished. I’m grateful to KJDS for commissioning this incredible work and bringing it to life."

📍 Hear it live again on April 8 at 7 PM at the Historic Tennessee Theatre.

Our Story

The Stanford Eisenberg Knoxville Jewish Day School is honored to bring Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust to Knoxville in January 2019. Violins of Hope is a collection of over 50 restored violins that were played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. These instruments have survived concentration camps, ghettos, pogroms and many long journeys to tell remarkable stories of injustice, suffering, resilience and survival.

This life-changing program will educate tens of thousands of adults and students in our community through unique, inspirational and interfaith multimedia events.

Performances with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will be January 23 and 24 at the Tennessee Theatre.

The violins will be on exhibition at the UT Downtown Gallery from January 4 - 27.
