LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOGS Reducing losses of livestock Use of LGDs have been common elsewhere for centuries, but have only been commonly used in the U.S. since the 1970s.

Tuesday Training Tip - The number of dogs needed in a pasture depends on the type of stock, predator load, terrain, pasture size, and flock characteristics. We recommend that producers start with 1 or 2 dogs per herd/flock (~100 head) and add more dogs as needed. Some producers may need 1 or 2 dogs per 50 head, depending on the location.

Wet nose Wednesday Part 2: For those worried about their LGDs and the coming storms this weekend, make sure you have plenty of dry straw or hay for them to lie in. Also, a windbreak or shelter from the wind/rain is important. Your LGD should not have to be brought into a barn unless you are bringing your livestock in as well. The biggest concern is the dogs and livestock getting wet from heavy rain, followed by high winds, before they can fully dry out. This can cause hypothermia. If you suspect this, have lots of dry, warm towels ready and bring them into a warm room to dry. Provide feed and room-temperature water until their body temperature is normal, 100-102 F. If their temperature is below 98F, contact a vet immediately!
