KWS Farm to School Trail Run and Wellness Fair

KWS Farm to School Trail Run and Wellness Fair Dear Friends,

We invite you to participate in our 5th Annual Trail Run and Health & Wellness Event, on Sunday October 8th, 2017.

Last year, we had over 300 community members attend the event from around the Philadelphia region. The event will take place on Kimberton Waldorf School’s 430 acre campus, located at 410 West Seven Stars Road, Phoenixville, PA 19460. Our French Creek Conservation Trail is a single loop 5k, taking you across protected fields and through beautiful old hardwood forests, over dirt trails and tributari

es, and along the peaceful French Creek. We will also offer an exciting 10k course and relaxing 5k Nature Walk. There is something for the whole family to enjoy, including a Health & Wellness Fair, free delicious lunch for registrants, a free Kids Fun Run, children’s activities, and free post race massages. There will be awards and cash prizes, and Log Sleeve Shirts for all pre-registrants. This refreshing French Creek activity and Wellness Fair brings together outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, and supports our efforts on campus to promote environmental and clean water stewardship. We also have a two acre Organic Student Garden and an Organic Food for Lunch hot lunch program. This is a wonderful community event; please consider providing a donation for a sponsorship. Proceeds will benefit the Kimberton Waldorf School Community Spirit Fund. A vendor table at our Health & Wellness Fair is only $75 and our vendors receive complimentary lunch provided by Kimberton Whole Foods. Kimberton Whole Foods is the Presenting Sponsor of this exciting community event.

Playing through the greenery and litter of a mini forest's undergrowth for just one month may be enough to change a child's immune system, according to a small new experiment.

We have always loved our school grounds including over 400 acres of woods, water, and wildlife but this year we are fully appreciating the space because it is allowing us to have our students together safely.

Kimberton Waldorf School has a beautiful campus where milkweed grows in numerous pollinator gardens and a wildflower meadow. More Swamp Milkweed was planted today by KWS students ;)

Common Milkweed bloomed today! Monarchs, we are ready!

We could smell the perfume, even before we saw the spectacular flowers.

Monarch butterflies need milkweed to survive - it is the only plant their caterpillars can eat. No milkweed = no more Monarchs. All pollinators love it - lots of nectar and pollen for bees and other butterflies.

There are many kinds of milkweed native to the Phoenixville area (14 species), and they are all very pretty and brightly colored. The bright colors attract pollinators, and people! They are showy garden plants.

If you would like to add some to your yard, check out native plant nurseries. Yellow Springs Farm Native Plant Nursery and Artisanal Goat Cheese Farm is nearby, and a delightful place to visit. The Pughtown Agway has added a large number of native plants to their garden center. Most of my usual online sources are sold out - which is sad if you want to buy some, but also encouraging because it means many, many people are planting it. If you find somewhere to buy it, please let us know!

"Children need role models ... who can gently guide them to nature with excitement, optimism and an attitude of a lifelong learner," said Miyuki Maruping, a gardening teacher at the Waldorf School of Atlanta, who wasn't involved in the research.

A connection to nature may make children happier and more eco-conscious, a recent study shows. And we all need that now.
