Dear Kansas City Fandom,
We need to talk about the future of ConQuesT, and by extension that of the Kansas City Science Fiction & Fantasy Society.
Most of you know me. I served as the Director of KaCSFFS through the pandemic, and have Chaired, co-Chaired, and Vice-Chaired the convention multiple times. I’m currently on deck to co-Chair ConQuesT 55 in 2024. Unfortunately, I don’t know if we’ll be able to hold the convention at all.
The first issue is finances. Costs for convention space have skyrocketed since the pandemic, more than doubling the amount of money that it takes to run ConQuesT. We ended up far in the red this year. We are not in debt, but we have essentially burned through our reserves.
Know that we’re not alone in this–many other small, fan-run conventions have been feeling the crunch post-pandemic. Many have folded, and others are likely to follow. Now, there is a bright spot in that the Redux Society has come forth with a proposal (which we will discuss at the October meeting), but there is still our second problem to deal with: personnel
Both ConQuesT and KaCSFFS have been suffering from dwindling membership. Part of this is due to an aging demographic, and part can be attributed to the loss of KaCSFFS’s home at the Writers’ Place several years ago. We currently have two Board positions unfilled because there was nobody willing to stand for the jobs. And ConQuesT staff has been slowly shrinking, too. We still don’t have anyone who has expressed interest in Chairing in 2025, but the problem goes deeper.
I’m going to be honest, ConQuesT staff are running close to burnout. We’re exhausted. Even if we can dig out of the financial problem, we’re running the risk of organizational collapse due to insufficient personnel.
If ever you had thought about jumping on board with ConQuesT staff and getting involved, now is the time. We need your support, or it’s simply not going to exist for much longer.
So please, to everyone who has an interest in the future existence of KaCSFFS and ConQuesT, come to the October KaCSFFS meeting on Saturday the 21st at 6:30pm. The location is Carol’s house–but since we don’t want to blast her personal information on social media, if you need directions, please PM an admin or KaCSFFS/ConQuesT member.
It’s time to forge the future, whatever that may be.
