Dance in the Park Dance in the Park The annual outdoor dance concert that takes place in beautiful Roanoke Park the first Saturday after Labor Day in September.

The event starts with a free dance class and then showcases a variety of local dance companies of all genres which have included ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, break dance, capoeira, swing, tango, salsa, hooping, aerial dance, and many different types of cultural dance such as Middle Eastern, Indian, Irish, Scottish, Somoan, Spanish, Mexican, and West African. City in Motion Dance Theater, Inc. has been a part of the cultural fabric of Kansas City for 40 years! Incorporated as a not-for-profit institution in 1985, its mission is to foster the development of high-quality contemporary dance programming and expand the dance audience in the Kansas City metropolitan region. City in Motion builds bridges in the community with its professional modern dance company, school of dance, outreach program, and performance series that includes “Dance in the Park” and “Modern Night”. Voler (Volay) – Thieves of Flight, Kansas City’s Premier Aerial Academy and Aerial Performance Ensemble, is an edgy and experimental collaboration of aerial dance and acrobatics, comprised of performing artists from the Kansas City area. With over 15 years experience, they have set the bar high with award winning teaching, notable performance style, innovative curriculum, and supportive community.
Voler features performances and training in aerial silks, straps, hammock, lyra (hoop), static trapeze, rope loop, hand balancing, acro yoga, aerial yoga, flexibility, modern dance, contemporary dance, ambient characters, and theatrical development.

Soundz of Africa Esoke is a collaboration between the Traditional Music Society & Esoke Cultural Arts Center. These two non profit community-based organizations have been providing cultural arts programs to the Kansas area, collectively for over 25 years, using the music, dance, and songs from the West African regions of Mali, Senegal, Gambia and Guinea. With the shared goal of cultivating a global understanding of indigenous cultures through music and dance from around the world, they have been an integral part of the arts in education efforts of the greater Kansas City community. By way of classes, workshops, demonstrations and performances they continue to promote and preserve the integrity of the African arts, using it as a means for the community to understand and appreciate other world cultures. Soundz of Africa is one of four performing groups under the umbrella organization Traditional Music Society, founded and directed by Bird Ellington Fleming. Esoke is a performance group made up of drummers and dancers associated with the Esoke Cultural Arts Center, founded and directed by Yaminah Muhammad.

Teaching at Traditional Music Society and Alchemy Space in Kansas City, Missouri, she inspires students to explore the transformative power of this art form. Her performances, which have graced weddings, community events, and burlesque shows, captivate audiences with a global style rooted in modern Cairo trends. Known for her high-energy moves and graceful flair, Kimberly travels nationally and internationally to share her passion with diverse communities. CLOUDS Dance Company is a project-based contemporary dance company directed and founded by Olivia Emert. Rooted in Kansas City, CLOUDS is composed of performances, collaborations, movement research, and training spaces, all which aims to offer connection and kinesthetic experience. Artistic director Emert brings her diverse portfolio to the company, ranging from the playfulness found in her work “TAG,” the palpability of environment in “WAY OF WAVES,” and vulnerability of “it’s a fine line…,” which premiered the company. Seeking to create work which is authentic and honors the complexity of human emotion, CLOUDS performances explore integration of emotional awareness and highlight relationships through impactful and interweaving movement.
