From opposite sides of the world comes a musical collaboration built on unexpected connections. From China to Appalachia blends Appalachian traditions with Chinese musical influences, creating a sound unlike anything else. Discover how a simple jam session sparked a cross-cultural journey of music, storytelling, and surprising similarities that continue to bring people together.

ISC is proud to partner with the Jackson Theatre to host From China to Appalachia on June 6 for an unforgettable evening celebrating the power of stories and music across cultures.

This week, we are welcoming Josh Goforth to Storytelling Live!

Josh grew up in Madison County, North Carolina, surrounded by the music and stories of his ancestors. He is a highly accomplished storyteller and old-time, bluegrass, and swing musician playing close to 20 instruments. His fiddling was featured in the movie Songcatcher, both onscreen and on the soundtrack.

This clip is from the 2020 Virtual National Storytelling Festival, where he performed with his friend and mentor David Holt. The song, Cotton Eye Joe, is from Byard Ray, a Western North Carolina bluegrass legend.

You can see Josh this week with five matinee performances, Tuesday through Saturday at 2 pm, an evening concert Thursday at 7:30 pm, or you can get a virtual ticket!

From rural communities to the national stage, stories shape how we see ourselves—and how policy takes form. What happens when those stories are led by lived experience?

Kiran Sirah, past president of the International Storytelling Center, will be leading and moderating conversations at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention 2026 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

His sessions focus on storytelling as a strategy for narrative change and include a panel within the Empowering Rural Arts & Culture Pathway.

The International Storytelling Center is proud to support the work of Americans for the Arts and the artists and leaders shaping this national conversation.
