📌It’s time to get brutally honest & have a 💜to💜📌

I don’t know where Abby’s Angels will be next year.

So far this year, we have taken in 179 dogs. Last year, we took in 181 dogs for the entire year—and we still have three months left.

The need has increased drastically. But the support needed to keep up with it has decreased.

Donations, fundraiser and event participation, foster homes, volunteers… all of it has become harder. We are not raising enough to cover the basic care for the dogs we take in, let alone the emergencies that seem to come more often than not.

We opened Clovers Closet to bring in additional funds for the dogs to try to take the burden off the shoulders of those donating all the time. But even the Closet may have to shut its door at the end of the year. There just aren’t people coming in to get things for their dog, there aren’t enough sales to sustain keeping it open at this point.

We also hold a free pet pantry the first Saturday of every month for pet owners in need of help in Bedford county. That would also have to end if we have to close or restructure.

We know times are tough. We truly do. And we are so incredibly grateful for every person who donates, fosters, volunteers, shares our posts, attends an event, or helps in any way.

But we cannot continue to take in this many dogs without more people behind us.

We already say no far more often than we say yes—not because we don’t care, but because we do not have foster homes for them to go to. We have five—yes, five—foster homes that take in multiple dogs all year, every year, and carry the majority of this work. We have a handful of others who help here and there, and that help matters tremendously. But without consistent fosters, we cannot say yes when dogs need us.

Since Sunday this week, we have been asked to take in over 58 dogs. That number is astronomical. The need for help far outweighs the capacity to help.

We have tried different events, different locations, asked for help with applications, and begged for fosters. We honestly do not know what else to change.

If this continues through the rest of the year, we may have to close our doors or reduce the number of dogs we can help by about 75%. Or we may have to restructure and only take in medical dogs who need help, like Guppy. Turning away owner surrenders, saying no to police, wardens, humane officers. At the rate we are going, continuing as we have simply is not feasible.

We don’t want that. The dogs certainly don’t deserve that.

We were recently approved to have a stray hold license, meaning we can take in strays if we have room. Rescues in PA are not technically allowed to take in stray dogs unless they have been held at a stray hold facility for a minimum of 48 hours. But we have no room and no where for them to go. Our dream has always been to find property or land where we can build play yard, training yards, agility yards, a medical building and an overflow building for those exact reasons—to help when we don’t have a foster open. But that dream is slowly fading away. We can’t stay open, let alone build an amazing concrete rescue, if we don’t have the support to do so.

Rescue cannot survive on the shoulders of a few people. And we’re not saying all of this for sympathy or attention, we’re saying it because the dogs need more, deserve more and should be able to have more. We need more eyes on our posts, more shares, more comments, more reactions (and not just on this post, but all of them), more foster homes, more volunteers, more people at events, and more financial support—if we are going to keep saying yes to the dogs who have nowhere else to go.

Joe and Maple (former Angel, Feta) stopped by today to drop off a donation! They recently hosted Squonkapalooza in Johnstown and not only invited us to have a table and bring some adoptables, but also donated part of their proceeds back to our Angels! They raised money and split between several amazing organizations and shared $365 with us. We are so very thankful for their hard work, their kindness and generosity, for inviting us, and for throwing one heck of a great day for the community! Check them out next year!🐽🥳

What do you guys think, should we do this all again in a year?? We had so much with the 80s that we thought let’s go 90’s. After all the 90s was our decade. The movies and music of the 90s shaped me into the dysfunctional adult I am now. This drawing while referencing a photo of PJ Harvey is also very me in the 90s. Green tights, combat boots, and a flannel shirt tied together almost any outfit. From ages 9-19 I hit a lot of milestones in the 90s. So I’m excited to celebrate Squonking in the 90’s. Applications will come out in January.
