Emile Soki Dianzenza and Kanda Bongo Man on this early 1970s photo in Kinshasa reminds us of the enduring strength and evolution of the musical scene in the DR Congo way before the rise of Papa Wemba as an icon, Koffi Olomide, Cindy le Coeur, Tshala Muana, Lokua Kanza, Ferré Gola, Felix Wazekwa, Fally Ipupa, etc.
Much like the Congo River, which absorbs all other rivers in the region, Congolese music has remained resilient against outside influences. Since the 1940s, we have witnessed a constant emergence of artists, each bringing a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the cultural heritage.
The history is defined by legendary eras featuring icons such as Wendo Kolosoy, Adou Elenga, Le Grand Kallé, Dr. Nico Kasanda, Franco Luambo Makiadi, Tabu Ley, Sam Mangwana, Vévé Vérckys Kiamuangana, Zaïko Langa Langa, and Thu Zaïna excluding the 1980s.
I particularly want to highlight the significant impact of the Soki brothers and their band, Bella-Bella, in the early 1970s. The vocal pairing of Maxime Soki Vangu and his younger brother, Emile Soki Dianzenza, was a remarkable partnership that resonated across the continent. In many cases songs were better known than their names because of the nature of that particular decade.
Even as the brothers pursued separate paths with offshoots like Bella Mambo Rénové, they continued to captivate audiences. This era also saw the rise of Kanda Bongo as a member of Bella Mambo Rénové, who worked closely with Emile Soki Dianzenza. Their vocal styles were so complementary that it was often difficult to distinguish between them during performances.
While Emile Soki Dianzenza’s career was tragically cut short in 1990, his legacy endured through his peers. Kanda Bongo eventually moved to Paris in late 1970s, later successfully entered the European market in 1980s, and became Kanda Bongo Man, the international superstar of Soukous and the "King of Kwassa Kwassa," carrying the spirit of Bella-Bella and Bella Mambo Rénové to global stages.
