The Carriage House, located behind the Howard mansion, dates back to the 1880s. The building's framing was originally used as an entrance pavilion during the Southern Exposition, a five-year series of world's fairs held in Louisville, before being purchased by the Howards and installed on their property in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The family briefly lived in the Carriage House during the construct

ion of their mansion in the 1890s. The Carriage House burned in 1905, after which it was decided to re-locate it further back on the property. The “new” Carriage House incorporates significant portions of the original, making it a one-of-kind historical treasure. From 2016-2018, the Carriage House was refurbished into a state-of-the-art event center, with all the features and amenities of a modern venue surrounded by a beautiful historic building.

Our Story

The Carriage House, adjacent to Howard mansion, dates to the 1880s and was originally a one-story structure. The Howard family actually occupied the building during the construction of the mansion. Following a fire in 1905, it was decided to re-locate the refurbished building further back – probably due to the odors of the horses. The “new” Carriage House incorporates portions of the original. The second story was added when the structure was rebuilt.

Today, the Carriage House serves as a rental facility for meetings, private functions, weddings, and receptions. The unique building has undergone a 2-year, $1.2 million dollar renovation and features state of the art facilities and furnishings while retaining its historic charm. With porches and an open air courtyard, its location on the 2.5 acre site of the Howard Steamboat Museum offers a “better than special” atmosphere for any type of event.
