The Juneteenth Committee of Jamestown, NY
Celebrating Freedom, Past & Present
Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas finally received news of their emancipation. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it took nearly two and a half years for the news to reach all enslaved people. Juneteenth represents a pivotal moment in American hist
ory, a day of resilience, hope, and the promise of a brighter future. The Jamestown Juneteenth Planning Committee has been serving our community for approximately twenty years. Comprised of a dedicated group of area residents passionate about commemorating the holiday and freedom for all - we honor the legacy of Black freedom while empowering future generations through education. Every June, we come together to organize a vibrant Juneteenth celebration in Jamestown, a joyous event filled with music, food, and activities that educate and inspire. Proceeds from the celebration are used to fund our scholarship program, awarding financial aid to a deserving local student pursuing higher education. Preserving History:
We keep the memory of Juneteenth alive by hosting educational events and celebrations throughout the year. Building a Stronger Community: Juneteenth is a time for us to come together as a community, celebrate our diversity, and foster understanding.
2. Investing in the Future:
By awarding scholarships, we directly empower the next generation of Black leaders and changemakers. Working Together as a Community:
