Tomorrow night, there is am open event at No Bird discussing the state of American Healthcare with Dr. Dawn Francis, a gastroenterologist located in Jacksonville, FL. She is also a payment policy expert specializing in Government payment for healthcare services in the United States and has given multiple lectures on this topic. She is the Medical Director for Government Programs Strategy at Mayo Clinic.

⚠️ Heads up to other small venues and event spaces — we caught a second scam attempt at No Bird.

Twice now we’ve received an inquiry that looked something like this:

"I am planning a birthday party for my wife in April and want to hold it at your venue on the 6th with about 35 guests. Please let me know if you can accommodate a jazz band for the event and how to proceed with payment for them."

The first time, we went through the normal process of holding the date and discussing logistics. The renter asked us to coordinate the band and other vendors (catering, cake, décor, etc.). A check was overnighted to cover the costs.

Here’s the catch: the “band” was quoted at $11,000, and the renter quickly began asking us to send the band a 50% deposit.

Thankfully we waited for the check to clear before paying anyone. When we took it to the bank, they confirmed the check was forged. The scam relies on pressure to pay the band deposit before you realize the payment you received is fake.

What’s wild is how convincing it seemed:
• The inquiry looked normal
• The “band” communicated about setup
• The event details were plausible

Everything was just normal enough to keep things moving — but just off enough to make us cautious.

🚩 The scam appears to involve someone posing as both the renter and the band, hoping venues will send out a deposit before discovering the check is fraudulent.

We love supporting artists and paying bands — but this was clearly an attempt to exploit that.

Please be careful out there, fellow venues and event organizers. If something feels rushed or unusual with payments, wait for funds to fully clear before paying vendors.

Sharing in case it helps someone else avoid the same situation.

The Emerald Trail is one of Jacksonville's most ambitious community projects, and we're looking for someone to help bring it to life.

We're hiring an 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫.

This role will help lead the design and construction of trail segments from concept to completion, working closely with partners including the City of Jacksonville, Florida - Government and the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), as well as engineers, contractors, and community stakeholders.

Ideal candidates have:
• A background in civil engineering or a related field
• Experience managing infrastructure or transportation projects
• Strong communication and project management skills

COMMUNITY UPDATE

Because of you, we’re making real progress.
So far we’ve raised:
✨ $2,800 in community contributions
✨ $4,200 in vendor savings from partners who stepped up to help

And we just received incredible news — Springfield Preservation & Revitalization (SPAR) has awarded us a facade grant that will match up to $4,000 for improvements to the exterior of the building.
This means we can begin addressing more than just the door — including railings, fencing, paint, and landscaping that were always part of the original plan.

The last few weeks have honestly been overwhelming in the best way. So many people showing kindness, encouragement, and support for this space.

We did have one moment where someone attempted to scam us out of $11,000. It was hard not to get excited about the possibility of help in a moment like this, but we slowed down, trusted our instincts, and caught it before anything serious happened.

Through it all, we still believe this will come together exactly as it needs to.
