Ryan goes from good to great in two races

Western High School track and field athlete Ryan Good saw an opening in the 800-meter run at the Division 2 state finals Saturday at Hamilton High School.
Like a Formula-1 race car driver, he went for it.
The result was a victory in the 800-meter run at the MHSAA Division 2 state finals.
Coupled with his win earlier in the 1,600-meter run, the junior went from good to great in two distance races.
Good said the racing was so tight in the 800-meter run as he was cutting people off and others were doing the same thing in a very tight pack near the 400-meter mark.
“The racing was so tight so you have to take a chance when you see it,” Good said.
He cut through an opening near the 500-meter point and took the lead. Good won the 800-meter state final with a time of 1:53.81.
He won the 1,600-meter run earlier in the meet with a time of 4:13.2.
The junior considered himself more of a 400- and 800-meter kind of runner until earlier in the season when he ran a 4:16 time in the 1,600-meters. That was one of the top times in the state at that point in the season.
“I ran 4:18 at the Branch County Meet and decided I might as well go for the 1,600-meter event (at state),” Good said. “My dad helped me train for the 800- and 1,600-meter events.”
Good said he has transitioned physically and mentally over the year.
“My body has changed … I was scrawny and weak a couple of year ago,” Good said. “I have also gained a lot of mental strengths over the years.”
He credits God for his success in running.
“God has given me the ability to do this,” Good said. “I have been able to spread the Word.
“It has been an incredible experience … being able to bring the mood up and appreciate the fact that people have noticed that.”

Saenz sets school, MHSAA D-4 high jump record

The Michigan High School Athletic Association official who was running the high jump competition at the Division 4 state championships joked about moving the height to 6 feet in the girls’ event.
Concord High School sophomore Annie Saenz had just won her second consecutive state title in the event with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches.
Saenz smiled for a minute and then decided to move the height to 5-7. After clearing that height she moved the bar to 5-8.5.
She set the Concord school record and MHSAA Division 4 state record with a successful jump at 5-8.5.
But 6-0 was still in the back of her mind.
“I do have a goal of jumping 6-0 at some point in high school,” Saenz said. “One of my biggest goals is to win four state titles in the high jump.”
Not bad for someone who has been high jumping for only four seasons at Concord.
Saenz said she does a lot of work during the offseason with her vertical jumps. Playing volleyball helps the sophomore.
“It is hard to get jumps sometimes,” Saenz said. “I try to get my legs as strong as possible.
“I do have a pit at the track I can work on.”
By clearing 5-8.5 in the high jump, she broke a nearly 40-year-old record at Concord High School. The previous school record was 5 feet 8 inches held by Angela Salvatore who set that mark in 1987.
Saenz said she is looking to attend a Division 1 college to run track.
“I am looking somewhere in the south,” Saenz said. “Some colleges have talked to me about it (college track).”
Saenz won three all-state medals on the day participating in two other relay events for Concord.
“I just tried to concentrate on one event at a time,” she said.

Round of 16 set in City Golf Championship

The round of 16 for the Jackson City Golf Championship at the Country Club of Jackson has been set.
There were few surprises in the opening round as most of the top seeds won Sunday at CC of J.
Defending champion Trevor Raymond will face Lance Woodland after Raymond defeated Justin Fowler 3&2 and Woodland won his match over Jason Norris 4&2.
Former Jackson Masters champion Joey Badall will take on Riley Hestwood in the second round following a 7&6 win over Brian Carney and a 2up win by Hestwood over Chris Chaney.
Jamie Clark defeated Chris Chrzan 4&3 in the opening round and will face Kyle Bowler who defeated Shane Clark 5&4.
Brian C**n defeated Logan Douglas 6&4 and Greg Zeller earned a 2&1 win over Tony Hurd setting up a battle of multiple major winning golfers in the round of 16.
Bret Valkuchak faces Mike Brockie in the second round as Valkuchak defeated Matt Brown 5&4 and Brockie beat Rob Longbrake 3&2.
Mike Raymond and Michael Boldt face one another in the round of 16 as both defeated their opponents 3&1.
Luke Girodat defeated Drew Blackgrove 5&4 and Nick Henman won 2&1 over Logan Wagner setting up a round of 16 matchup.
Cody Lysher and Zach Defrain will face one another in the round of 16. Lysher defeated Andy Horodecki 4&3 and Defrain outlasted Justin Bunch 2 up.
The round of 16 match-play matches will be played June 2 at the Country Club of Jackson.
Quarterfinals will be June 3 or 4, the semis are June 5, and the 36-hole final will be June 6.

District Baseball

Division 1 at Mason: The Vikings defeated Battle Creek Central 15-0 in the opening game of the district. The Vikings lost to Mason 17-0 in three inning in the district final. Jackson finishes the season with an 11-29 overall record.

Division 2 at Western
Williamston 8, Western 2: The Panthers lost in the district semifinal at home Saturday. Williamston scored all eight of their runs in the first two innings. Andrew Parrott and Chase Budd both finished with one hit and one RBI. Western finishes the season with a 29-4-1 record and an Interstate Eight Conference title.

Haslett 7, Michigan Center 1: The Cardinals fell in the district semifinal at Western High School Saturday. Hunter Thorpe had two hits for MCHS (15-18).

Division 2 at Coldwater
Marshall 17, Pennfield 3: Marshall earned an easy win in the district semifinal game Saturday. Kye Saunders drove in six runs for Marshall in the win. The Redhawks lost 9-8 in the district final later in the afternoon. Andrew Natte hit a grand slam home run but it was not enough for MHS. Lincoln Fuller finished with three hits in the loss for Marshall (19-18).

Division 3 at Lumen Christi
Grass Lake 4, Leslie 0: The Warriors won the district semifinal 4-0 to open the day. Dustin Paul pitched all seven inning for GLHS with five strikeouts. Manny Schafran had two RBIs for Grass Lake.

Lumen Christi 9, Napoleon 0: Wes Learned had four hits and knocked in two runs for the Titans. Kellen Crowley and River McClusky combined for the no-hitter in the victory. After a slow start to the season, Napoleon finishes the year with a 19-12 overall record.

Lumen Christi 11, Grass Lake 5: The Titans won at home in the district final. Lumen Christi scored eight times in the first three innings to pull ahead. Learned continued his hot hitting with two home runs and five RBIs. The Warriors could only muster four hits in the contest. Grass Lake finishes the season with a 27-9 record. The Titans advance to a regional semifinal Wednesday at Lansing Catholic High School against Springport at 4 p.m. The win advances to the regional final and quarterfinal Saturday.

Division 3 at Onsted: The Wildcats earned another district title with wins over Sand Creek (13-0) and Madison (6-5). Onsted will host Detroit Edison Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the regional semifinal with the winner advancing to the regional final Saturday at Plymouth Christian. Brennan Wonders had two hits and two RBIs for Onsted in the district championship win.

Division 3 at Hanover-Horton: The Comets defeated Homer 6-5 in the district semifinal but lost 8-3 in the final. Brady Pond knocked in the winning runs in the top of the seventh inning for HHHS in the 6-5 win over Homer. Slade Feller also had three RBIs for Hanover-Horton. Wyatt Winchell and Dale Hitz each finished with two hits and one RBI in the loss for Homer ((15-18).

Division 3 at Lansing Catholic: Springport defeated the host school 4-3 and defeated Laingsburg 11-0 in the district final advancing to the regional semifinal Wednesday against Lumen Christi back at Lansing Catholic. Andon Zienert earned the win on the mound for SHS against Lansing Catholic pitching all seven innings and striking out five batters. Jake Kregel had three hits and three RBIs in the district championship win and Ripken Overweg finished with two hits and three RBIs for Springport (27-5).

Division 4 at Hudson: Addison defeated Pittsford 5-4 in the district opener but lost to Hudson 14-0 in the district final. Key hits in a three-run rally for Addison in the Pittsford win were by Sawyer DeRossett and Levi Chestney. Addison finishes the season with a 9-23 record.

Division 4 at East Jackson: The Jayhawks defeated Webberville 9-2 in the district semifinal. Hunter Kurzynowski had three hits and two RBIs and Tanner Sildak went 4-for-4 at the plate for VCL. Justin Barnes earned the pitching win with a two-hitter. Dansville defeated Vandercook Lake 15-2 in the district final. Barnes had the only two hits for VCL (12-24).

District softball scores, highlights

Division 1 at Mason: Lakeview defeated Jackson 15-0 in the district semifinal. The Vikings were hitless in the game and finish the season 0-21.

Division 2 at Western: The Panthers won the district with a 2-0 win over Eaton Rapids and a 5-1 win over Michigan Center in the district final. The Cardinals advanced to the final with a 4-2 win over Northwest. Amber Gregory threw a one-hitter in the win over ERHS. Alyvia Ott was the hitting hero for Western with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Gregory hit a home run, knocked in two runs, and earned the pitching win in the 5-1 win over MCHS in the district final. Lilly Nutt had the only hit for Michigan Center in the district final. Emma Pond struck out 12 batters for MCHS in the win over Northwest. Jaidyn Fulk and Morgan Dingee each finished with two hits and one RBI in the contest. Bailey Krutsch had one hit and one RBI for Northwest in the contest. The Panthers advance to the Division 2 regional at Fowlerville High School Saturday at noon facing Milan. Chelsea and Carleton Airport are on the other side of the bracket.

Mikayla Jurek had two hits and one RBI for GLHS in the win over CCHS. Savannah MacBlain had two hits for CCHS in the contest. The Warriors scored nine times in the third inning blowing open a close contest in the district final against Napoleon. Kennedy Collins and Makenzie Hilberer each hit home runs in the game. Katelyn Ault had two hits and two RBIs for Napoleon in the championship game. Napoleon defeated Stockbridge in the opening round in a slugfest – 15-10. Molly Simpson had four hits and Hayden Rendall finished with three hits and three RBIs for Napoleon (20-14). Grass Lake travels to Hanover-Horton Saturday in the Division 3 regional semifinal against Homer at Noon. Lumen Christi and Clinton are on the other side of the bracket.

Division 3 at Olivet: Lumen Christi won the district title with a 6-4 win over Hanover-Horton in the championship game. The Comets defeated Springport 9-4 in the opening round and the Titans defeated Olivet 17-0. Ollie Powers had three hits including one in the two-run rally in the top of the seventh inning in the district championship game. Bella Wrozek also had three hits for LCCHS in the district championship win. Hanover-Horton was limited to four hits in the championship matchup. Lucy Wrozek and Powers homered in the 17-0 win over Olivet. Wrozek finished with three hits and four RBIs in the game for Lumen Christi. Amanda Ley hit two home runs in the 9-4 win over Springport. The Spartans could only muster three hits in the loss to HHHS. Springport finishes the season with a 27-7 record and Big Eight Conference title. Lumen Christi now travels to Hanover-Horton Saturday for the regional semifinals. The Titans face Clinton at 10 a.m. with Grass Lake and Homer on the other side of the bracket.

Division 3 at Homer: Homer used a little home cooking to win the district title Saturday. The Trojans defeated Hillsdale 9-1 and Quincy 9-8 in the district final. Lani Miller finished with three hits and one RBI in the win over Hillsdale. Lillian Stemaly and Riley Zuck each had two hits and two RBIs in the win. Brooklen Minix was the hitting hero in the championship game win. She had four hits – including two home runs – and three RBIs. One of the homers came in the pivotal sixth inning where the Trojans scored three runs to retake the lead. Homer faces defending state champions Grass Lake in the Division 3 regional at Hanover-Horton Saturday. The two teams square off at noon. Homer is 22-11 on the season.

Division 4 at Hudson: Hudson defeated Addison 18-2 in the opening round of the district. Caylee Campbell had one hit and one RBI for Addison in the loss. The Panthers finish the season with a 9-21 record.

Saturday, May 30

Division 2 at Hamilton High School: Western High School finished fifth with 25 points. Ryan Good of Western won the 800-meter (1:53.81) and the 1,600-meter (4:13.2). The Panthers finished seventh in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:25.95 and a team of Parker Yokom, DeMarcus Hill, Isaac Fullerton, and Good. Braden Vancalbergh was sixth in the pole vault (13-10) for Western earning all-state honors. The top eight in each race earn all-state medals.

Division 3 at Kent City: Columbia Central finished seventh (22 points), Lumen Christi was eighth (20), Hanover-Horton placed 11th (19), Springport was 24th (10), and Napoleon finished 39th (five). Top eight finishers were: Jeremy Russ of Hanover-Horton was eight in the 100-meter dash (11.0), Johnny Walters of Lumen Christi was fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.04) and Luke Ellison of Columbia Central was right behind him (22.16), Walters finished second in the 400-meter dash (48.68) and Trent Troyer of CCHs was fifth (49.93), Clint Couchman of Columbia Central was sixth in the 1,600-meter run (4:26.55) and fifth in the 3,200-meter run (9:39), Austyn Hocter of Hanover-Horton was second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.52) and Zack Johnson of Columbia Central finished seventh (15.01) in the same event, and Johnson placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles (40.22), Hanover-Horton took fifth place in the 400-meter relay (43.55) with a team of Grant Bulgrien, Rudy Lowry, Hocter, and Russ, Columbia Central placed fifth in the 1,600-meter relay (3:27.11) with a team of Ellison, Johnson, Troyer, and Wyatt Vowell, Hanover-Horton placed third in the 3,200-meter relay (8:09.38) with a team of Brodey Bially, Cooper Flick, Wyatt Hassenzahl, and Chad Tyson, Gurmilan Singh of Lumen Christi was second in the high jump (6-5), and Tucker Wiginton of Springport was the champion in pole vaulting (15-0), Drew Norman of Napoleon finished fourth (13-9), and Karl Swager of Lumen Christi finished seventh (13-3).

Division 4 at Baldwin Middle School in Hudsonville: Vandercook Lake and Concord tied for 28th place with eight points, and Jackson Prep tied for 40th (five points). Top eight finishers were Jordon Patrick in the 100-meter dash (11.34) and seventh place in the 200-meter dash (23.22) for Jackson Prep, Concord finished second in the 1,600-meter relay (3:30.22) with a team of Connor Stevens, Karson Frazer, Maddox Hutchinson, and Trenton Frazer, and Dallas Swaenepoel placed second in the pole vault (13-6).

Division 1 at Rockford High School: Terrasia Treadway finished 16th in the preliminary round of the 200-meter dash in 25.46. The top eight advance to the finals.

Division 2 at Hamilton High School: Karsyn Smith of Michigan Center finished ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:19.74 – missing all-state honors by one tenth of a second.

Division 3 at Kent City High School: Lumen Christi finished 21st (eight points), Grass Lake was 26th (six), and Napoleon was 49th (two points). Top eight finishers were: Samantha Schroeder of Lume Christi was fourth in the 3,200-meter run (11:17), Napoleon finished seventh in the 400-meter relay (51.12) with a team of Myla Hasegawa, Maci Straub, Emme Naylor, and Lily Eagen, Asleigh Simon of Grass Lake finished third in the pole vault (10-6), and Kristen Warren of LCCHS was sixth in the long jump (16-11.5).

Division 4 at Baldwin Middle School in Hudsonville: Concord finished seventh with 32 points. Annie Saenz won the high jump for a second consecutive season with a Division 4 and school-record leap of 5-8.5. Concord finished fourth in the 3,200-meter relay (10:01.73) with a team of Haley Stimer, Audrey Rinehart, Cieara Barrett, and Audrey Pyle, the Yellow Jackets were second in the 1,600-meter relay (4:06.75) with a team of Bradie Lehman, Saenz, Barrett, and Pyle, Concord was fifth in the 800-meter relay (1:48.17) with a team o Hannah Ryan, Lehman, Saenz, and Barrett, and Pyle finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:22.12).

North Adams-Jerome 13, Tekonsha 0: Ryker Campbell pitched a no-hitter for NAJ and Conner Arsenault had three hits in the district win. Tekonsha finishes the season with an 0-13 overall record.

Concord 13, Litchfield 1: The Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs on only four hits in the district semifinal. Adam Miller had two hits and two RBIs and Nate Fritz earned the pitching win with 10 strikeouts.

Concord 9, North Adams-Jerome 4: The Yellow Jackets rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning on four hits, five stolen bases, and three errors by NAJ. Gavin Riske had three hits and one RBI and Waylon Mandrelle knocked in two runs for Concord. Riske started the game and struck out seven batters in five innings. Nathan Fritz earned the pitching win for the Yellow Jackets (9-19). Concord hosts the regional opener June 3, at 4 p.m., against the winner of the Hudson district. The second half of the regional will be played June 6 at 12:30 p.m. and a quarterfinal scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spring Arbor University.

Division 4 at Britton-Deerfield
Petersburg-Summerfield 16, Vandercook Lake 1: Taylor Sildack had one hit and one RBI for VCL. The Jayhawks finished with one win in 2026.

Manchester 14, East Jackson 4: Leonie Delaballe had one hit and one RBI for East Jackson. The Trojans finished with one win in 2026. Ava Rentfro had four hits – including a home run – and drove in five runs for MHS.

Division 4 at Concord
Camden Frontier 8, Concord 5: The Yellow Jackets had 15 hits but could only push across five runs in the district opener. Mya Barrett had four hits for Concord.

Division 4 at Athens
Colon 12, Tekonsha 0: Tekonsha lost in the opening round of district play at Athens High School. Angel Veenkant had the only hit for Tekonsha in the game.

Marshall 17, Pennfield 3: Marshall earned an easy win in the district semifinal game Saturday. Kye Saunders drove in six runs for Marshall in the win. The Redhawks lost 9-8 in the district final later in the afternoon. Andrew Natte hit a grand slam home run but it was not enough for MHS. Lincoln Fuller finished with three hits in the loss for Marshall (19-18).

Division 3 at Lumen Christi
Grass Lake 4, Leslie 0: The Warriors won the district semifinal 4-0 to open the day. Dustin Paul pitched all seven inning for GLHS with five strikeouts. Manny Schafran had two RBIs for Grass Lake.

Lumen Christi 9, Napoleon 0: Wes Learned had four hits and knocked in two runs for the Titans. Kellen Crowley and River McClusky combined for the no-hitter in the victory. After a slow start to the season, Napoleon finishes the year with a 19-12 overall record.

Lumen Christi 11, Grass Lake 5: The Titans won at home in the district final. Lumen Christi scored eight times in the first three innings to pull ahead. Learned continued his hot hitting with two home runs and five RBIs. The Warriors could only muster four hits in the contest. Grass Lake finishes the season with a 27-9 record. The Titans advance to a regional semifinal Wednesday at Lansing Catholic High School against Springport at 4 p.m. The win advances to the regional final and quarterfinal Saturday.

Division 3 at Onsted: The Wildcats earned another district title with wins over Sand Creek (13-0) and Madison (6-5). Onsted will host Detroit Edison Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the regional semifinal with the winner advancing to the regional final Saturday at Plymouth Christian. Brennan Wonders had two hits and two RBIs for Onsted in the district championship win.

Division 3 at Hanover-Horton: The Comets defeated Homer 6-5 in the district semifinal but lost 8-3 in the final. Brady Pond knocked in the winning runs in the top of the seventh inning for HHHS in the 6-5 win over Homer. Slade Feller also had three RBIs for Hanover-Horton. Wyatt Winchell and Dale Hitz each finished with two hits and one RBI in the loss for Homer ((15-18).

Division 3 at Lansing Catholic: Springport defeated the host school 4-3 and defeated Laingsburg 11-0 in the district final advancing to the regional semifinal Wednesday against Lumen Christi back at Lansing Catholic. Andon Zienert earned the win on the mound for SHS against Lansing Catholic pitching all seven innings and striking out five batters. Jake Kregel had three hits and three RBIs in the district championship win and Ripken Overweg finished with two hits and three RBIs for Springport (27-5).

Division 4 at Hudson: Addison defeated Pittsford 5-4 in the district opener but lost to Hudson 14-0 in the district final. Key hits in a three-run rally for Addison in the Pittsford win were by Sawyer DeRossett and Levi Chestney. Addison finishes the season with a 9-23 record.

Division 4 at East Jackson: The Jayhawks defeated Webberville 9-2 in the district semifinal. Hunter Kurzynowski had three hits and two RBIs and Tanner Sildak went 4-for-4 at the plate for VCL. Justin Barnes earned the pitching win with a two-hitter. Dansville defeated Vandercook Lake 15-2 in the district final. Barnes had the only two hits for VCL (12-24).

Three tie for medalist honors at City Championship

Three players tied for medalist honors during qualifying for the Jackson City Championship.
Jamie Clark, Bret Valkuchak, and Luke Girodat all shot 1-under-par 71s at the Country Club of Jackson Saturday.
