Dear Keaton fans and enthusiasts,
In 1993, an event was created that sparked a fire within the community to celebrate and appreciate the life of Buster Keaton who was born in Piqua, KS. The community energy and movement attracted attendees from all over the world. As with any movement or community event, it takes ongoing resources and community engagement to keep the fires alive. After the event in 2016, the community took a pause to re-evaluate the community interest. In 2021, the event was relaunched during the COVID period with a hybrid event, culminating in a full, in-person event this past September, 2022. As much as the events themselves were filled with incredible history, stories, and films, the local attendance did not grow or increase to support or justify any future efforts.
Today the Bowlus announces the official closing of the Iola Keaton Celebration after 27 event years in Iola, KS.
We are thankful for the many years the celebration graced our stage with amazing stories of Buster Keaton and brought so many artists and scholars to Iola. For those reading who attended our events throughout the years, we are grateful for your interest and support.
With Humble Gratitude,
Daniel Kays, Executive Director/Bowlus Fine Arts Center
