I woke up this morning and realized I was thinking about a question from yesterday's NoMiWoman Workshop...๐Ÿ’œ
Will my day be led by default or by my choices?

I want to say thank you to Abby Taylor of A Life You Love for sharing her morning with us and getting us thinking about the questions we ask ourselves.

We talked about giving ourselves permission to change, being more decisive, and choosing our lives by design instead of just letting them happen by default.

And thank you to all the women who came to learn, think, slow down, and be friends! These small group moments are the best part of the NoMiWoman Membership!

Rachel Straughen is the Education Director at the Grand Traverse Conservation District where sheโ€™s spent the last seven years leading environmental education programs, staff development, and youth engagement initiatives that connect thousands of learners with the outdoors each year.

Outside of GTCD, sheโ€™s also the photographer behind Rachel Straughen Photography LLC , a Traverse City-based wedding and event photography business. We caught up with Rachel to talk about noticing the natural worldโ€”through a camera lens and otherwise.

Itโ€™s the same instinct whether Iโ€™m leading a program or photographing a weddingโ€”the moment worth noticing is almost never the one you planned for, itโ€™s the one you catch because you were paying attention.

Start small. Learn the name of one bird you keep hearing (I highly recommend the Merlin Bird ID app!). Notice which trees change color first near your house or office. Step outside for your coffee instead of drinking it at the counter.

Connection to nature isnโ€™t about grand wilderness trips, itโ€™s about paying attention to the wild things already sharing your everyday life, whether thatโ€™s your backyard, a wedding venue, or a trail.

Congratulations to Kandi Lannen, Executive Director of the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan, on being selected as one of the โ€œLeaders of Northern Michiganโ€ by the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

Kandi was recognized for her leadership and commitment to serving older adults and their families across our region. When asked what inspired her to pursue this work, she shared:
