Wooooo grl, hi, it's Ko. I’m putting this out LOUD into the universe today. Are there any women in or near Indianapolis who want to be part of Woo Grl and build together? This ship is too big to steer alone and Indy has a real electricity running through it right now... I don’t want to ignore that.
Woo Grl started in 2019 with Nicole, Ari, and myself. We went in blind, worked our butts off, felt proud, and also felt drained. Then Covid happened. Life happened. I still have this beautiful organization, a million ideas, and an amazing fiscal partner in Girls Rock Indianapolis. What I don’t have is a team to carry this with me.
If you know me from shows, stages, random hangouts, or the timeline, you probably know I have a lot of passion and ideas. Consistency is hard for me. Ex*****on is hard for me. That’s part of my mental health reality. Not an excuse. Just honest.
I’ve also been afraid to ask for help. When people go quiet I assume they’re over it, then I get quiet too. I'm no longer doing that. I want to be transparent and clear. I want to reach out and collaborate, and I want you to reach back, too.
Woo Grl was never just “the first POC women-fronted music festival in Indy.” That is still very cool, yes, but it was always meant to be a community. In 2018 I asked where the women and non-binary creators were, and more than 120 of you showed up with links and energy on my Facebook post alone, then soon followed with over 350 submissions over a 3 month span. That response is still the spark.
I don’t know exactly where Woo Grl is headed. I do know it needs to be more than a festival. It needs to be a movement and a resource people actually use.
Maybe you want to start a monthly pop up show in rotating secret locations. Maybe you want a regular collaborative visual art night where an artist teaches their medium and everyone gets to try it. Maybe you just bought a giant warehouse and you are itching to turn it into a multi use dream. Picture it: a woman run recording studio where women can make music in a safe space, rental practice rooms for women fronted bands, office pods, personal gallery spaces, micro pop ups, a little cafe (MAYBE?? I mean dream big right??) all inside one building. Men can enter by invite and vetting only. Tell me that does not slap.
Maybe you want to throw a fashion show. Where are all the designers at. Where are the runway shows here with red carpets? Maybe you need help with promo, a small starter budget, a few chill grls to bounce ideas with. Suddenly you are building with three, four, ten, twenty women, and your shower thought becomes something real and regular with a buzz you can hear from blocks away. That is what Woo Grl should be. This is not mine or ours. It's Yours.
I invite you all in the comments to ask any questions, share what's been on your mind lately, what have you been working on, what's been weighing on your heart, what do you think Woo Grl needs most, what does Indy need most, what do you need most?
Let's go.
Ps. Woo Grl domain has been chillin' in the abyss (edit: sorry for the confusion, the domain is NOT in the abyss, just not LIVE rn. sorry for the terminology ya'll). I transferred everything from GoDaddy to Square Space (I took ya'lls advice) but I'm overwhelmed with designing it. I need someone who can make it shine and look cool??? I am not cool, help! Reach out if you're interested. [email protected].
STAY SAFE OUT THERE PLS. IF ANYTHING, JUST STAY SAFE.
