Maria Bamford is “among the most daring and charismatic performers of her generation,” Ava Kofman writes. The comic, who has tested the bounds of what is considered standup, often confronts mental illness—and the stigma that surrounds it—in her work. Growing up in Duluth, Minnesota, Bamford struggled with bulimia and intrusive thoughts, though it wasn’t until she was in her thirties that she received the clarifying diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Then when Bamford turned forty, she had a hypomanic episode and was diagnosed as having bipolar II; for the next year, she ended up in and out of psychiatric hospitals. These struggles are recounted in “Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story,” a new documentary directed by Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley. The filmmakers interview not only Bamford but also her family and admirers in the industry. Bamford discusses being the subject of an Apatow documentary, her passion for open-book accounting, and dating in her fifties: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/28R7fw
