Have you heard? 📱 We have a big change this year to the category that makes us unique: “Indiana Only” is now the “Indiana Showcase!”

For beer, the entry has to feature an Indiana-grown or produced ingredient. We’ve expanded the definition of “produced” to allow ingredients that aren’t necessarily grown here as long as significant processing is done in the state. Coffee stout? Use a local roaster. Barrel-aging? Get it from an Indiana distiller. We’d still love to get your home-grown hops and for you to use in-state malt, but this opens the door to a much wider variety of styles and expression.

For cider and mead, the primary juice or honey still has be from Indiana, but the rule change on adjuncts and secondary fermentables will allow a lot more creativity and breadth of styles.

Get creative and show us the best of Indiana! đŸ»

"Yes, my last name is really legally Mead. I started competing in mead making because I wanted to make better mead and I wanted good feedback from independent judges. This led me into the BJCP and judging. I met Sandy Cockerham through the BJCP and she talked me into coming down to judge mead, cider and beer at Indiana State fair my first year. My favorite thing about the Indiana State Fair is seeing all my judging friends and meeting new judges each year. Your awards ceremony is amazing. I always tell everyone that they need to come down and judge at least once and see the amazing awards party. Last year was the first time I did not place with anything at the Indiana State Fair so my primary goal this year was to win my first beer medal here and also place in the mead and cider categories. My goal now is to push myself to become a better overall brewer and hopefully win a few more beer medals at next year's state fair."

"I’ve been brewing beer for just over ten years. The hobby started when my wife gave me a one-gallon starter kit, and I instantly fell in love with the process. Since then, I’ve been brewing a batch or two every month. Even after all this time, I still enjoy watching the fermentation process and that first taste of a new beer I’ve created. From the beginning, I’ve entered local competitions but I only began competing nationally in the past two years, after a fellow homebrew club member encouraged me to give it a try. This is my second year entering the Indiana Brewer’s Cup. It’s been a great experience both times, and I look forward to competing again in the future."

Join us in congratulating Jake Keefer (Broad Ripple, IN), 2025 Best of Show Mead/Cider, Homebrew Division!

Jake, a BJCP judge since 2013, began competing seriously in 2023. He focuses on cidermaking new, but plans to get back into brewing beer. He says "the tannins and complex acidity expresssed in bitter and sharp cider apple and perry pear varieties are what I am most excited to turn into hard cider. My best friend at Purdue knocked on my door one day in 2010 and asked me to help him brew a batch of beer. I reluctantly agreed, but by the end of the brew day I was asking when we would be doing that again. I would encourage you to drink more cider, because there are so many great local producers all over the midwest!"

Jed’s been brewing since 2012, crafting creative, unique beers, especially European sours long before they hit the shelves. He wants to give a big shoutout to his local homebrew club, the Bloomington Hop Jockeys. "We've got a lot of great brewers and they help me keep pushing my boundaries to make interesting beer."
