Hello June! June is busy with BIG events on the fairgrounds! Thousands of visitors will make their way to the SD State Fairgrounds for the events this month, making it one of the most exciting months of the summer.

🌟 Static Exhibitor of the Month – May Edition🌟

Meet Cheryl Hoseck of Brandt, SD, whose South Dakota State Fair exhibiting story began all the way back in the late 1950s through 4-H. Fair participation has been a family tradition for generations — Cheryl’s mother also exhibited in the Women’s and Horticulture Buildings and always believed that if people stopped entering exhibits, fairs could become a thing of the past.

Today, Cheryl enters professional art, flowers, and vegetables, though over the years she has participated in many other areas as well. One especially memorable chapter was competing in the original pie baking contest, where she earned 2nd runner-up the first year, 1st runner-up the second year, and first place the final year the contest was held.

Some of Cheryl’s favorite fair memories come from the late 1960s and 1970s, when she and her late husband spent the entire week at the fair showing Arabian horses and camping on the grounds. Through those years, they built friendships and made many memories with fellow exhibitors from across the state that have lasted a lifetime.

For Cheryl, the best part of the fair has always been the people! She speaks fondly of department staff past and present – especially former department Superintendents Clarice Theyn, Paul Mundt and Ernie the Gurney man. She also admits it’s pretty exciting to receive a Best in Show ribbon when you least expect it!

Her advice for anyone thinking about exhibiting is simple: “If you have a project, just enter! You’ll enjoy the fair even more and learn from others.”

What Cheryl enjoys most about her projects is that they keep her active and outdoors. Gardening keeps her moving, and while creating original artwork can sometimes be challenging, seeing the finished result makes it all worthwhile.

As we close out Beef Month, we’re celebrating the ranchers, families, and communities who make beef such a proud part of South Dakota life.

You’ll see that tradition on full display at the South Dakota State Fair — in the show ring, in the barns, and in the foods you look forward to every year.

Thanks to the South Dakota Beef Industry Council for helping us share the story of beef with fairgoers from across the state — and be sure to look out for all of the fun things they have in store during the State Fair.

We’ll see you in Huron, September 2–7.

We are so excited to host the Family Campers & RVers - FCRV in July! Check out this opportunity to be a part of the fun!

Coloring pages can be found in the comments section below, at the Huron Public Library, the South Dakota State Fair office, and the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau.

Head into one of these locations to pick one up and, once complete, return it back to those locations for display.

Did you know the Friends of Maga ta-Hohpi are working with Family Campers & RVers - FCRV for a year of collaboration, awareness, and education? While we are organizing programs and outdoor activities for their Campvention in July, YOU can also be a part of the fun! 🎉

A special coloring page featuring the National Wildlife Refuge System mascot, Puddles the Blue Goose, and the FCRV mascot, Bizzy Beaver, can be found at the Huron Public Library, the South Dakota State Fair office, and the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau. Head into one of these locations to pick one up and, once complete, return it back to those locations for display. In July, we will collect all the coloring pages and proudly show them off to the participants at Campvention 2026! 🚙
