The Land at Hawkins Loop

The Land at Hawkins Loop 63 acres of fresh air for your easy-going events, creative retreats, and overnight stays in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina

The Land at Hawkins Loop is an enrichment and event center located in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina—a short, scenic drive from Durham, Hillsborough, and Roxboro. Chapel Hill, Raleigh, RDU International Airport, Greensboro, South Boston (VA), and Danville (VA) are within an hour by car. Brendan and Kat Love salvaged two adjoining century-old farmsteads to create the destination, converting houses, b

arns, and outbuildings into modern homes and meeting spaces. Local and visiting experts provide programming that makes nature, creativity, relaxation, and hands-on learning more accessible, particularly for young people in rural Person County, NC. The Land at Hawkins Loop strives to be a safe, inclusive, welcoming environment for all. Contact us about previews and partnerships.

✨ Bird Fest Partner Spotlight ✨ Birding lights up our senses and opens up new ways to experience nature like listening to bird calls, feeling the breeze, smelling the grass, and utilizing binoculars and spotting scopes to see the details and behavior of birds from a distance.

Thanks to the national nonprofit Field Inclusive, Hawkins Loop has not only deepened our understanding of how to create safe, welcoming, and inclusive outdoor experiences, we are also able to offer new birders the chance to learn and practice with the tools of the trade. Stop by the registration desk to borrow a pair of binoculars while you’re here and be sure to follow to join them in amplifying and supporting marginalized and historically excluded biologists and researchers.

🎟️ Bird Fest is Saturday June 6! Tickets are FREE and trails are open from sunrise to 1pm but pre-registration is required. Check out HawkinsLoop.com/birds for details!

✨ Bird Fest Partner Spotlight ✨ This event began in 2023 thanks to an email from looking for private landowners in Person County who would be willing to allow research technicians to survey the bird populations on their property.

We jumped at the chance to learn more about our land, and the experts we have met along the way have been superstar mentors, collaborators, and cheerleaders for our vision and the environment at large.

💡 The best news? Conservation can happen anywhere and birds need all kinds of different habitats to thrive. Come learn how you can help protect them, whenever you live!

🎟️ REGISTER at hawkinsloop.com/birds to learn about the and more efforts across the state.

15 years ago today we eloped in Los Angeles, choosing one another and celebrating in a small and intentional way that suited us just right. Since then we’ve chosen one another again and again, through the unique highs and lows that come with building a marriage, a family, a farm, and a business all at the same time.

Everything we do at Hawkins Loop is rooted in what we’ve loved experiencing in our own life and our hunch that others might like it, too. Our new Hitched at Hawkins Loop elopement packages have all the special touches you’re daydreaming of, streamlined to keep your budget and stress-level in check.

🎨 Announcing our 2026 Artist in Residence: illustrator and naturalist Casey Girard of Asheville-based River Thrush Studio! 🎨

Join at Bird Fest on Saturday, June 6 for a free drawing workshop and purchase their prints, stickers, and more to give as gifts or take home for yourself. Register at HawkinsLoop.com/birds

In July and August, visit the galleries in Uptown Roxboro to view work created by Casey during the Hawkins Loop residency.

“Nature/science and learning are my two great passions that I love translating into art,” Casey shares. “My main focus from nature and science are animals. The way animals live and survive is fascinating. When I create art with an animal subject I enjoy finding the joyous or simple moments of life and sharing the tranquility and vulnerability of the creatures. When drawing birds I look to their behaviors to find a body position that best represents their species.”

✨ The Hawkins Loop Creative Residency program welcomes artists, educators, and nature-based practitioners for short-term, private stays in a 1901 farmhouse with access to the property’s 63 acres of pasture and wooded trails. Participants are encouraged to combine personal rest with their creative pursuits and community engagement. Previous guests have included and Reach out with questions or suggestions for future partnerships.

This headline! 😍 Thank you Person County Courier-Times, , and everyone who came out to our May Sunday Stroll featured in this article.

If you read our latest email newsletter, you know that the wish tree is a new annual Hawkins Loop tradition in honor of Kat’s parents, who were married on May 2, 1964 and lived a life together that embodied faith, community, and service to others. We miss them both dearly and feel them here with us all the time, especially on days like the one we shared with our neighbors and community leaders last weekend.

Person County has so much riding on this year’s local elections. Visit www.ncsbe.gov for the facts on voter registration and take heart that there are qualified, compassionate people on the ballot.
