When Valerie told me she was going to add a few extra outlets to the treehouse with zero electrical experience, I was extremely skeptical. But if there is one thing I’ve learned about my partner, she WILL figure out how to do something if she puts her mind to it! There is nothing an hour of YouTube university and stubborn gumption can’t solve.

A lot of people on the internet forget that you have to start somewhere when it comes to making stuff. I wanted more of a whimsical look and I couldn’t find anything online that was functional, whimsical and cost effective, so I created something myself. This was the first time I built any type of structure like this. I made it up as I went and learned a lot of things along the way and I have to say, I’m pretty proud of how it ended up turning out.
I have a few more things to add, like insulation and a ramp, but other than that it is complete. It has already survived two heavy rains and stayed totally dry, so I’m happy. It may not be for everyone, but it’s perfect for us.

And remember what Thumper says, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” Or in this case, do comment your criticisms because it helps our engagement. Idk, live your life.

We have created build plans and added them to our website for purchase if you would like to make one of these cuties yourself. Comment DUCK and we will send you a link! Your duckies will thank you.

My toxic trait is that I will never pay full price for something I know that I can figure out how to make myself.

We asked our treehouse builders to leave the scrap black locust logs left over from the decking posts because we knew we could use them for future projects. When it came time to decorate the interior, we couldn’t find any bedside tables that fit our criteria: tall, small, with a rustic and whimsical vibe that didn’t break the bank. Enter “I can make something myself”

How I made it ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

🪵 We measured for the height we needed and purchased some metal hairpin legs online.
🪵 We found a log that was the right size for the space and then carefully clamped it to our picnic table (sometimes you just have to use what you have around).
🪵 I then used the chainsaw to cut it down to a more manageable thickness.
🪵 From there, I used a belt sander to sand down and smooth the uneven surfaces and get the piece more level. (Hate on all you want but they get the job done just as well as any other tool).
🪵 Next, I used a router with a roundover bit to give a more polished look to the rough edges.
🪵 One last sanding and then it was time to add the legs. I set them where I wanted and then traced an outline of the bracket for my pilot holes.
🪵 Drill time- I drilled my pilot holes and then screwed the legs into place.
🪵 Next came the satisfying part. I oiled it with mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax and let it soak overnight. Since it was end grain, it absorbed every bit of the oil.

And voila! Take that consumerism! My wife is thrilled with the outcome and that’s what matters.

How much would you pay for something like this in the store?

Little did I know that Valerie gets triggered by Scooby Doo. Turns out her childhood bestie bonded with a different friend over the show and she felt left out because she didn’t grow up with cable. Won’t be making that mistake again!
The videos you see posted don’t always show everything that goes on behind the scenes!

Can you believe this is the same little horse!? Rosie's winter coat vs her spring/summer coat gave us a big surprise. I've never seen a horse have such drastically different colors between seasons. With every shed she gets lighter and lighter! I know she was relieved for the grooming and shedding she had today!

ame girl, same.

Putting a mic on our duck obsessed toddler proved once again why we do what we do. Hearing her joy and squeals of laughter make all the hard work and effort we put into the farm worth it 100 times over. Sharing the story of how this pond came to be has spread joy to so many people across the internet, but the real magic has been seeing the joy it brings to our daughter. This pond has been such a blessing for our whole family, but watching her experience it might be our most favorite part of all.

We're still in disbelief that this beautiful pond is on our property.

One minute our ducks were wading around in a kiddie pool from Walmart and the next they have this spectacular water feature any duck would be proud to call home. The size is perfect, the waterfall is everything and the sound of flowing water has added a level of tranquility to this place that we didn't even know we were missing. It's become one of our favorite spots on the whole farm.

Peaceful Ponds built this so quickly that it truly felt like we snapped our fingers and it appeared! Brian and his team were an absolute dream to work with. If you're thinking about adding water feature, this is your sign!

The best things on this farm have never come from a business plan. They've come from relationships and saying yes when something lights us up.

A month ago, ducks weren't even on our radar. Then a community member needed to re-home a few ducklings. Then someone in our comments offered to build them a pond. And eight days later… here we are!

That's the kind of magic that happens when you move toward what feels right and stay open to your community showing up for you. We've always believed that the most beautiful things on this land have come from reciprocal relationships — us giving to the soil, the soil giving back. Us showing up for our people, and our people showing up for us. This pond is living proof of that.

Peaceful Ponds made this dream a reality faster than we thought possible. Brian was incredible to work with — communicative, talented, and clearly someone who loves what he does. He even installed a pump system for us to be able to water our garden directly from the duck pond, which will be an amazing regenerative addition to our food system here. (We’ll be making another video on that in the future.) If you need any outdoor living work done, we can't recommend them enough.

We don't always know what's coming next around here. But we're following our joy, and we'd love for you to follow along too. Up next…a duck house!
