We have added a new historical spirit to our property.
We now proudly serve ABSINTHE! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿฅƒ

What is Absinthe?
Absinthe is a strong spirit created when a neutral alcohol is distilled with botanicals like anise, wormwood, fennel and other herbs and spices for a licorice-like flavor. Commonly known as "The Green Fairy" It can be green in color or colorless. It has a very high alcohol content, so it cannot be consumed as a shot. It must be diffused with water, soda, or another N/A beverage for safe consumption.

This was the drink that inspired all of the great artists of our time. Edgar Allen Poe, Ernest Hemmingway and Van Gogh are three greats that often come to mind when people think of Absinthe.

We are serving it the classic French cold drip method, featuring Wisconsin's own Wollersheim Dance Hall Blanche Absinthe! You can alter the sweetness based on how much sugar is used and the taste is a sublime mix of anise, lavender and lemongrass. This absinthe is perfect for anyone who isn't keen on the black licorice taste of anise. It is blended with the other botanicals for a cold, smooth, light, refreshing drink that is perfect for a hot summer day.

Come experience the show that is the original classic style of the cold drip, marvel at the shimmer of the louche when the sugar mixes into the spirit, kick back, sip and enjoy the unique flavor profile of this historic beverage in our historic property! ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks to our supporter Bridget Lokken, we now have photos of our illustrious Dr. Jacob W Hamilton! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ After our last post about him, she did a deep dive to find more information and uncovered these amazing photos!

We are so grateful for the help in research and discovery. So much of our history has been lost over time and we are actively trying to put the pieces of our puzzle back together. It's so wonderful to put a face to the man and we look forward to getting these photos up in our place. Thank you Bridget for helping us to honor our past and the man who worked so hard to treat our Small Pox patients back in the 1870's.

We are now an official WI State Highway DOT approved tourist destination! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค˜

Now when traveling 12E/27S, you will see our fancy new Tourist Oriented Directional Sign and never miss the turn onto King St to find us!

We are so grateful to our State Highway DOT commissioner and the Clark County Highway Department for approving us and working with us to make this signage happen. We are very visible coming from the other direction on the highway, but we're easily missed coming down from Hwy 10. This sign was so very needed and we are elated to see it up for the busy holiday weekend. The timing was perfect :)

Next on our list...a billboard! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

As we kick off our first DAY TOUR of The Humbird! for 2026 today. we wanted to share more history we've uncovered.

If you've been following our posts or have explored our property during a ghost hunt, you are familiar with Dr. Jacob Hamilton. Dr. Hamilton was our physician of record for our area during the Small Pox epidemic that hit between 1873-1876. Dr. Hamilton not only worked here onsite treating our patients when we were a Small Pox Hospital, he had an office in Alma Center and made house calls throughout the Garden Valley area.

Once the small pox epidemic was over, Dr. Hamilton moved his office from Alma Center to Merrillan in 1878. From that point on we lost track of him in census records and couldn't find any additional information on him.

During a deep dive through old newspaper articles we finally found him! But wow, we weren't expecting this! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

After a short stint in Merrillan, Dr. Hamilton left WI for CA to establish a practice out there and became a research scientist in a medical college in San Francisco. Many pioneer doctors on the front lines of disease often came up with remedies and cures they wanted to share with the medical community, so this move in his career makes sense.

However, it appears that life and work became too much for him. After 15 years out in San Francisco, Dr. Hamilton left this mortal coil by his own hand! According to the newspaper article, he suffered from insomnia and being unable to find relief, decided to be done.

We can't help but wonder what was driving him to the point of no sleep and why a medical research doctor with treatments and cures at his disposal would take such extreme measures. Was he homesick? Was it too much work and burden of life? Was it perhaps a guilty conscience? We'll probably never know. What we do know is this adds to the mystery of his work here. Did he treat our patients well or did he perhaps try some unorthodox methods that failed and it ate away at his conscious? Perhaps our spirits can give us some clues as to why our good doctor fell by his own hand....
