After Council Member Twila Carter’s public comments about removing safety infrastructure and bike lanes, residents across the Heights started writing in.

I was biking on 11th when I saw this out of nowhere.

This photo is from April 2025.
At the time, Twila Carter had just been reported by the Houston Chronicle as saying she supports removing bike lanes.

I thought the safety improvements had met their fate.

Later I found out it was part of a bus stop upgrade,
the bikeway wasn’t removed, just temporarily impacted during construction.

But that moment stuck with me.

Because around Houston, we’ve seen safety infrastructure quietly disappear.

And today at City Council, Twila Carter shared she’s receiving calls to remove the 11th Street bikeway.

That’s how this starts.

If we don’t speak up, 11th could face the same fate.

Six out of six District C candidates at Saturday’s forum said yes to protecting 11th Street—as the Mayor continues rolling back safe infrastructure across Houston, including armadillos on Heights Blvd, the pedestrian safety medians on Houston Ave, the destruction of the Austin Street bike lane, the removal of safety elements from Telephone Rd reconstruction, and the removal of shared-use path from the Montrose Blvd redesign.
