9/14 - 10/14 Reynier-Leya Novo presents NOMOS / Solar System
Presented across OUTFRONT ‘s Houston digital media network—eighteen digital kiosks and one large-format digital bulletin—Art Club Season 1 alum Reynier Leyva Novo ‘s newest project becomes a distributed observatory, carrying a reconstructed solar system into public space.
More about the work:
NOMOS / Solar System considers the human impulse to give form to what exceeds us. The cosmos reaches us through images, measurements, maps, models, and names; through them, distance becomes knowledge and the unknown begins to acquire the structure of territory.
NOMOS, from the Greek nomos (νόμος), refers to the order through which space is divided, organized, and established as territory—the point at which abstract extension becomes something that can be measured, named, mapped, and occupied. In the Solar System, bodies that remain physically remote already exist within human culture as territories of knowledge, image, language, and imagination.
Working from scientific images and planetary data, the project reconstructs celestial bodies as solid geometric and polyhedral forms. Planetary cartography, radar imagery, photography, elevation models, and displacement data provide the material basis of the work. Using Unreal Engine, these sources inform the construction of each 3D body, while relief, material, light, atmosphere, and movement are developed in real time.
The project continues Novo’s investigation into data, abstraction, natural systems, technology, and public space. Produced specifically for Houston—a city whose history and present are inseparable from human spaceflight, aerospace engineering, planetary science, and mission operations—the work brings that inquiry to the scale of the city.
NOMOS / Solar System is dedicated to everything we still do not know—and to infinity.
