Ten years ago, a little Star Wars bird let us know August 10 is the birthday of Bonnie Piesse who plays the younger Beru in the prequels and the Kenobi series. The local Star Wars fan clubs showed up with a cake to celebrate her while she was here in Houston.

Also, Bonnie gave a live music performance for us and the crowd, playing guitar and singing original songs. It was a magical encounter with an enchanting, beautiful lady!

Happy Birthday, Bonnie!

In Houston, August 9 is Nichelle Nichols Day! May she rest in peace. Ten years after that was established, we mourn her recent passing and embrace her vibrant memory.

In 2012, a small group of folks launched a fledgling show at the Galleria. The first headliner guest was chosen, not only for her place in TV & Star Trek history, but to be honoured for a lifetime of service to the space program and the years she lived & worked in Houston as the best-ever NASA recruiter. She added hundreds of minorities and women to NASA.

We asked city hall to present her with the Key to the City, but Houston doesn’t do that. Instead, they gave us a proclamation certificate declaring August 9th as “Nichelle Nichols Day”.

With a limited run of T-shirts to commemorate the event and honour her, Nichelle was presented with the framed proclamation and a shirt as the main event of the Saturday of the show.

May her memory be eternal! We were all blessed to have been with her those few days and heard her sing as well!

R.I.P.
She was a trailblazer. She was a great woman in television history. She was the very best, most prolific recruiter that NASA ever had and a most beloved character to inspire fans of all races, ages, and genders to reach for the stars. Her voice, even when not lifted in song, was a sublime melody.

She will be missed and the world will never know her like again. God rest the soul of Nichelle Nichols. Eternal memory!!!
