🎬 Afro-Latino Heritage Spotlight: Laz Alonso 🇨🇺✊🏾

As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, today we recognize Laz Alonso, an accomplished Afro-Cuban American actor whose journey represents the beautiful connection between African, Caribbean, Latino, and Black American culture.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., to Cuban immigrant parents, Alonso graduated from Howard University with a business degree and worked on Wall Street before pursuing his passion for acting.

His career has included memorable roles in Avatar, Fast & Furious, This Christmas, Miracle at St. Anna, Detroit, and the television series The Boys.

What makes his story especially meaningful for our Afro-Latino History Spotlight is that Alonso has publicly spoken about being Afro-Cuban and navigating both his Black and Cuban identities. In a 2026 interview, he discussed how his Afro-Cuban family roots helped shape his life and career.

His journey reminds us that Black history reaches far beyond borders. The African diaspora lives throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States, and around the world.

❤️ Houston Black Heritage Festival — Serving Our Seniors

What a beautiful blessing it was to serve our seniors last Saturday at our monthly FREE Senior Breakfast at the Houston Texans YMCA! 🙏🏾❤️

For the fourth month in a row, the room was filled to capacity! That speaks volumes about the need for programs that bring our seniors together for good food, fellowship, love, and community.

The Houston Black Heritage Festival sends a heartfelt THANK YOU to every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and heart to help us serve. This is what community looks like—showing up, giving back, and taking care of one another. 🤝🏾🖤
