Think you know everything about our walls? 🕶️ 🎰
Everyone knows the tourist stories, but if you want the real history of how this place ran in the 1960s, you have to look at the paperwork (or lack thereof).
Here are two things they don't print in the standard history textbooks:
• The Great Coffee Shop Illusion ☕🥩
Because gambling was completely illegal in Arkansas, the casino floor couldn't legally exist. To dodge the feds, the massive casino operation was completely kept off the books. Officially, on all federal tax documents, The Vapors was listed strictly as a high-end restaurant and a humble coffee shop. Millions of dollars flowed through the back room, but on paper, we were just selling a whole lot of T-bone steaks and caffeine.
• The Name Was a Joke on the Law 💨
Why "The Vapors"? While it sounds like a classic mid-century lounge name, it was actually a giant inside joke. The founders named it after the historic "Valley of the Vapors"—the thermal mist that made Hot Springs famous. It was the mob's cheeky way of telling the government that their illegal casino was just as natural and permanent to the town as the hot springs themselves.
We're keeping that legendary, unpredictable history alive every week at Vapors Live. Come have a drink at the original bar where the real deals went down!
