Seeing a sitting president share racist content targeting the Obamas is a painful reminder of how normalized cruelty and racism have become in plain sight. Still, we choose to lead with honor, love, and dignity, just as the Obamas have always done. They represent grace, intelligence, Black excellence, and a deep commitment to service, even in the face of relentless hate.
During Black History Month, this moment hits even harder. It reminds us that the progress our elders fought for is being tested in real time, and the resilience of Black leaders continues to be met with resistance rather than respect.
Let us be clear: racism is not normal, it is not harmless, and it should never be accepted as background noise in our society. We recognize how triggering moments like this can be, especially for Black communities and for anyone who believes in justice. Moments like this are also a call to action. We cannot afford to remain idle.
Fighting back looks like showing up and staying engaged. It looks like voting and helping others vote, especially in the midterms. Volunteering in your local community and supporting organizations doing the work on the ground. Educating your family, friends, and neighbors on the power of their voice and their vote. Supporting Black led businesses and media. Speaking up when you see harm, even when it feels uncomfortable. Protect your peace, without surrendering your voice.
We honor the Obamas not just by celebrating who they are during Black History Month, but by continuing the work they have always stood for: progress, dignity, and a future where hate never has the final word.
