Updated list of road closures due to flooding.

Shelby County Schools after school care will be closing at 5 p.m. today, Monday, Feb. 10, due to the potential for flooding in the area. All parents are asked to pick up their students by 5 p.m. for all students and staff members to make it home safely.

The Weather Prediction Center (part of NOAA, same as us) issues "Excessive Rainfall Forecasts". They issued a "High" for our northern part of the area, which is significant!

In their discussion (you should check it out), they explain their reasoning very well...

"...conditions are very wet across the region...with soil saturated, streamflows high, and dams nearing capacity in spots. Also, we are pre growing season, meaning there is less vegetation to absorb the rainfall. Thus the antecedent conditions suggest that rainfall of the magnitude forecast will cause significant and potentially life threatening flooding and flash flooding today into tonight...."

There is also an explanation of the uncertainty of where exactly the axis of the strongest rain will set up. If it moves a little bit farther north, we may not see quite as much, but if it moves south, more of central Alabama will see heavy rainfall.
