As we continue sharing the incredible journey of the 2026 Molokaʻi Hoe, we skip ahead to the closing moments—to what makes this race unlike any other in the world.

After the miles, the salt, the struggle, and the finish line, we reach for one another.

Hand in hand. Voices rising together in Hawaiʻi Aloha.

The ocean we have crossed is still before us. Those who paved the way are held in our hearts. And here, paddlers from across the globe stand united in a song that brings us home.

This is how we close the day.
This is what we carry forward.
This is Molokaʻi Hoe and OHCRA.

First light at Hale O Lono. Crews gather around their waʻa, checking rigging, readying paddles, and taking in the sunrise over Molokaʻi.

Then comes the sacred pause. Protocol grounds us in purpose—honoring our kūpuna, those who paved the way, and the island that welcomes us to these shores.

As the start draws closer, the energy builds. Nerves. Excitement. Adrenaline. Months of training come down to this moment, with teammates beside you and the Kaiwi Channel ahead.

Before the first stroke, we ground ourselves in the purpose of the crossing.

The protocol before the 2026 Molokaʻi Hoe presented by Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority gives us a moment to set our intentions, honor our kūpuna and those who pave the way, and remember the responsibility we carry each time we step into a waʻa.

Mahalo to those who guide this protocol, and to every volunteer, partner, sponsor, family, and community member whose work makes this race possible. We cross with gratitude, carrying forward what is entrusted to us.
