The Hapalua Invitational Team Challenge delivered on Sunday 👟🌺

This is the elite team competition at The Hapalua, with a $5,000 prize purse, bringing together top local runners from across Hawai‘i for a unique race within the race.

Based on a classic cross-country scoring format, all 28 runners race together, with points awarded based on finishing position. Each team counts their top 12 finishers, while places 13 and 14 are displaced - not scoring, but still able to take points off the board. Lowest total score wins.

And this one was close.

Team Duke Statue edged it with a score of 153 to Team Diamond Head’s 149, but the result could easily have gone the other way. If all 14 runners had counted, it would have come down to the final athletes across the line - and the win would have gone to Team Diamond Head!

At the front, Amanuel Mesel (Team Duke Statue) took the overall win in 1:04:17, setting the tone early. Right behind him, Tesfu Tewelde (Team Diamond Head) ran 1:04:30 for second, leading a strong response from the Diamond Head side.

Depth made the difference. Diamond Head stacked the early places with Kuikaika Kaahanui (3rd), Aaron Bennett (5th), and Jeremy Morgan (6th), with Melissa Berry and Macy Putman leading the way on the women’s side.

Team Duke Statue answered with consistency across the board - Benjamin Payne (4th), Samantha McClintock (7th), Jay Dela Cruz (9th), and a tight pack through the middle, with strong runs from Marissa Kunsch and Emily Reynolds helping keep their score low when it mattered most.

Led by their pro captains:
Team Duke Statue - Amanuel Mesel & Samantha McClintock
Team Diamond Head - Tesfu Tewelde & Melissa Berry

Congratulations to both teams for being part of such an exciting and closely fought race 🌺
