The Paeʻāina Challenge will feature a unique races spanning a weeklong celebration -- harkening back to the roots of our past while embracing 21st Century resources. Honoring the sports and cultural values of the waʻa community, festivities will include:

Paeʻāina Challenge Expo: Kicking off the weeklong celebration of the waʻa, paddlers, families and community members from around our paeʻāina w

ill go to Kualoa Beach Park for a day of culture, beach preservation, history and water sports competition. While more than 1,000 competitors and participants prepare their canoe for a second day of long-distance racing from Kualoa to Waikiki, visitors and community members are invited to enjoy music, activities and shopping from local artisans.

38-mile Oahu Challenge: This Kualoa Beach Park-to-Waikiki canoe race culminates in a Finish Line Spectacular on Waikiki Beach (fronting Hilton Hawaiian Village). The 38-mile course, for men and women of all ages, will span the east- and south-facing shores beneath the majestic Koʻolau mountain range and moku of Oahu. This battle of the paddle will determine the top crews in each category with prizes awarded in each division. The elite six finishing crews will be eligible to qualify for the Molokai Challenge the following week.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Pae‘aina Challenge previously set for October 1st and 2nd. We look forward to hosting this momentous occasion in 2023 to honor the legacy of hoe wa‘a in Hawai‘i and celebrate 70 years since the original Moloka‘i Hoe.
In lieu of this event, we will be honoring the memory of Uncle Gilbert Silva by hosting a memorial race on Sunday, October 2

With regatta season coming to an end, we’re please to announce the registration portal for the 2022 Pae’āina Challenge is now OPEN! Registration for new crews are open till September 30 6pm HST. At the canoe expo, only paperwork will be accepted.
