Located on Gullah Gullah St. Helena Island, the historic Penn Center is one of the nationโs first schools for formerly enslaved people and remains one of the most significant African American cultural institutions today. Rooted in education, preservation, and community, Penn Center plays a vital role in protecting and sharing Gullah Geechee history. Under the leadership of Dr. Robert Adams, Executive Director and anthropologist, the Penn Center continues to connect past to presentโensuring that the stories, traditions, and cultural contributions of our ancestors live on for generations to come.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent time at Penn Center during the Civil Rights Movement, using it as a place for reflection, strategy, and restoration alongside other leaders.
