NATIONAL No. 1 Tri-C Plant Science Team
May 5, 2017
Tri-C Plant Science Rocks!
While most Tri-C students were enjoying spring break, 18 plant science students competed at the National Collegiate Landscape Competition, held at Brigham Young University in Utah. Sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (and sometimes known as the Landscape Olympics), over 700 students from 62 colleges and universities converge each year to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Defending their No. 1 ranking among two-year programs, Tri-C students held off extraordinary talent and retained the top spot. The only four-year programs to perform better were powerhouse programs from Michigan State, BYU Provo, BYU Idaho and Colorado State. Ranking fifth overall, our students once again demonstrated that Tri-C’s program competes exceptionally well, even among the most prestigious four-year institutions.

TRI-C's Robotics Team are WORLD CHAMPIONS! On April 30, Tri-C’s Youth Technology Academy Team 120, "Cleveland's Team," competed against 640 teams in the First Robotics Stronghold Championship Competition in St. Louis. Participating teams were from the United States and the world, including Israel, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Turkey, Taiwan, China and the Czech Republic. The event had eight divisional competitions leading up to the championship game. Team 120, along with their alliance partners, competed in 18 matches to emerge victorious and become the Carver Divisional Champs. Then it was on to the Einstein Field and the world championship game. After defeating competitors in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, Team 120 and partners won a best of two out of three finals match-up to take home the win and the title of First Robotics World Champs.

Youssef Kallal and Imane Fathy are from Morocco. They immigrated to the US five years ago, met in the College's Multicultural Club. In 2011, they married. After studying English as a second language (actually English is their THIRD language after Arabic and French), they began their majors in information technology. Just a few weeks ago, Youssef became an American citizen. And just a few days ago, they graduated with honors. They plan to transfer to the University of Akron and hope someday to start their own IT business. I have no doubt they will.
