Walking the Southern Roads to Freedom
Walking the Southern Roads to Freedom is a historical journey retracing key routes used by freedom seekers during the era of slavery. This walk follows documented escape paths, highlighting the landscapes, communities, and histories connected to these courageous journeys.
The walk will cover a total of 64 miles, with stops at significant historical sites along the way. Participants will engage with historians, community leaders, and local experts who will share insights into the region’s role in the Underground Railroad and the broader struggle for freedom.
On Sunday, March 1st, we had an amazing and insightful lunch at our beautiful Pumphouse Museum in the Hidalgo Historic District. It is so important to shine light on this cause and to create awareness around these historical narratives and their lasting impact.
Special thanks to the Mayor and Commission, Commissioner Augusto Contreras, Rose Anne Garza from UTRGV, who is spearheading this project, and Hidalgo Preservation Officer
Charlie Barrios for helping make this possible.
Welcome to our beautiful Historic District — where history began and where history is being rebuilt.
