In 1784 a Virginian surveyor named Daniel Smith moved with his family to the Cumberland Settlement in present-day Middle Tennessee and began construction on a limestone, Federal-Style building that would house generations of the Smith family for almost 200 years! Located next to a Cumberland River tributary called Drake’s Creek, the house was built on part of the 3,140 acres that Daniel Smith received in land grants for his service in the Revolutionary War and his surveying work. Over the course of a decade, the Smiths constructed their home in three phases resulting in the story-filled, multi-cultural historic house that stands today. General Daniel Smith was a trailblazer, successful surveyor of Tennessee who named the state of Tennessee, a Revolutionary War patriot, Native American Indian negotiator, two-time Senator and one of the greatest Tennesseans of that era.

The gardens at Rock Castle have been part of this property’s story for more than two centuries. 🌿🏰

Historically, the grounds included an herb garden and peach orchard, alongside the larger agricultural operations of the property. With Daniel Smith’s medical training, plants such as rosemary and mint may also have been grown for their medicinal uses. And those peaches? The Smith family became known for making peach brandy from fruit grown here. 🍑

Today, the garden continues to grow thanks to the care and dedication of the Master Gardeners of Sumner County, who help manage and maintain this special part of the grounds.
It’s another example of how the landscape can help us tell the story of daily life at Rock Castle, not just inside the house, but beyond its walls, too.

The next time you visit, be sure to take a walk through the garden and take a closer look at what’s growing.

We are excited to introduce the cast of Little Women! 🎙️✨

One actress. Three characters. And at one point… a scene with herself. 👀

Cat is taking on not one, not two, but THREE roles in Little Women: A Live Radio Play—Marmee, the loving mother of the March sisters (and arguably one of the “little women” herself), Hannah, the family’s maid, and Sallie, a snooty gossip who brings a little extra personality to the story.
And because this is a live radio play, Cat even gets the unique challenge of performing a scene between Marmee and Hannah...all by herself! 🎭

Come see Cat and the rest of the cast bring this beloved story to life at Historic Rock Castle!
