The true Lamb of God was Jesus Christ, who in that room on Holy Thursday, in the midst of the old Passover liturgy, broke bread and, offering it to his disciples said, “This is my Body, which will be given up for you.”3 Then, at the end of the liturgy, he held up what was typically considered the third cup of blessing and announced, “This is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many.”
It’s those words, spoken at that meal, which make what happened a few hours later on Calvary a sacrifice. Without them, Jesus’s death isn’t a sacrifice; it’s just an execution— the bloody, violent taking of an innocent man’s life. But with those words, Jesus’s death is the sacrifice of the true paschal lamb. It’s Jesus as our new and eternal high priest offering the New Covenant Passover Sacrifice.
