🐴 Breed of the Week: The Canadian Horse 🇨🇦

Often called the Cheval Canadien or the “Little Iron Horse,” the Canadian Horse is one of North America’s oldest breeds and proudly holds the title of Canada’s national horse.

Descended from French horses brought to Quebec in the 1600s, this hardy breed was shaped by Canada’s demanding climate and early agricultural life. Over centuries, Canadian Horses became known for their ability to thrive on limited feed, withstand harsh winters, and work long hours with minimal maintenance.

What truly sets them apart is their calm, intelligent, and willing temperament, paired with impressive stamina and versatility. Today, Canadian Horses excel in a wide range of disciplines, including dressage, jumping, trail riding, driving, endurance, and western sports.

Resilient, adaptable, and deeply rooted in Canadian history, the Canadian Horse is a powerful reminder of the role horses played in shaping the country we know today. 🇨🇦

We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that Studly - those horse that inspired the launch of the Rescue was laid to rest today. Our hearts go out to Christine and her family on this immense loss. Christine was a part of our early days, when we were a group of Canadian horse owners/folks passionate about the breed but ignorant to the risks they faced. Thanks in large part to Christine and Studly, the Rescue has existed for 5 years and helped over 70 horses land well.

Rest easy, Studly. You done good.

Woohoo!! Another special Cheval Canadien has reached I-1 (Intermediare level dressage - one shy of Grand Prix)

From owner/trainer/rider Eliza Puttkamer Banks :
:Oh how I love my Toqueymonster! Canadream Kelbeck YouAndMe proudly owned by me and bred by Canadream farm made his I-1 debut this weekend! He warmed up off the trailer like a pro as he does... We both needed a little more confidence, but now we have ripped off the bandaid and moved up!... Judge Lori Barnard’s comment “he tries his heart out for you!!!” couldn’t be more true and it was a good place to get started with a new challenge."

Congratulations to all!

Technically, it’s a Fresian. But we can pretend it’s a Canadian. 🖤
