I was asked in another group if Hartselle was doing anything for the Fourth this year. Hell to the yes we are!
Absolutely! The mayor and council gave us unlimited use of the Sparkman Civic Center, Sparkman Park and the Soccer fields for the day (a decision they are likely already regretting)!
We are having (mostly legal) fun for everyone on the Fourth. We will have two bouncy houses, live music, car show, Sons of the American Revolution musket firing display, Daughters of the Revolution exhibits. We will have hot dog eating and watermelon eating contests. (EMT's will be on standby). A kids art contest will be going on and there will be a vendor area for local folks to come sell their crafts and things (no turtles!). There will be a decorated bicycle contest and parade, sack race and a three legged race for ribbons and prizes. ALL FREE! There will be a Patriot Walk where families can visit 13 education and interactive booths and get a "passport" marked. The full passport allows you to sign a Declaration of Independence with a quill pen for later city display. The Hartselle Historical Society will have a display with volunteers to talk about history, and many booths for churches, local companies and food trucks! The Aquatic Center will be open all day.
Our event runs from 9-2, with a patriotic program at 9 at the Sparkman Civic Center gym. The SAR, in Continental uniforms will post he colors and one of the members will read the Declaration of Independence.
There will be a free speech podium and possibly two cannons on display. Its going to be lit, now that we figured out that fines are cheaper than the permits!
