It’s been a long time, we shouldn’t have left you… without a dope Black History issue to flip through.

Issue 19 of Black Boots Magazine is finally here — a little behind schedule, yet somehow right on time. We wanted this edition to be filled with thoughtful, substantive stories that honor legacy, culture, and community.

In this issue, we celebrate the life of rodeo champion, trailblazer, and founder of the Cowboys of Color Rodeo, Cleo Hearn. We also explore the compelling and little-known story of Buffalo Soldier Private Fitz Lee and take a closer look at LOVE… its biology and its power as a revolutionary act for many of us.

You’ll also find a feature on real estate professional and accomplished Black equestrian Marya Jefferson, an exploration of Black barbershops as vital spaces of community and connection, and much more.

Thank you for your patience and for continuing to ride with us. We’re honored to share these stories with you.

Legacy lives here. Turn the pages.

As we step into the new year, we want to say thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and believed in Black Boots Awards and Black Boots Magazine. Your support, patience, and enthusiasm mean more than we can put into words.

We remain committed to making the Black Boots Awards stronger, more intentional, and more reflective of the excellence within our community. We also continue to grow Black Boots Magazine, creating space to amplify the stories, history, culture, and ongoing work of Black cowboys, Black cowgirls, and Black-owned and Black-led equestrian organizations across the country.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who has hung in with us as we continue to build, learn, refine, and sometimes figure things out in real time. BBA exists because these stories matter, and because our presence in the equestrian world is not new, not niche, and not optional. It is foundational.

This new year, we invite you to continue growing with us. If you’re a business, organization, or creative looking to reach an engaged and values-aligned audience, consider advertising in Black Boots Magazine and supporting independent Black equestrian digital media. If you’re visiting Connecticut or planning an event, we also encourage you to check out Black Boots Venue Rentals, a mission-driven event space that helps sustain this work and the communities we serve (www.blackbootsrentals com).

Thank you as well to everyone who has subscribed to our growing Substack community. Your presence there helps share more and build conversation beyond social media. We’re excited to bring more interactive content your way, and we encourage you to jump into the chat, share your thoughts, and help shape the conversations you want to see.

Most of all, thank you for standing with us in celebrating Black excellence in the saddle, in the arena, on the range, behind the scenes, and in history. We’re stepping into the new year with gratitude and a continued commitment to honoring the legacy and future of Black equestrians everywhere.

Here’s to a new year of storytelling, community, and growth. We love y'all for giving us grace and growing with us as we brainstorm and build. 🖤🐎

The Black Boots Awards and Black Boots Magazine team wishes you a happy and safe holiday season. 🎄✨

Thank you for your continued support as we keep refining the Black Boots Awards and growing Black Boots Magazine. There are still a few kinks to iron out, but amplifying and honoring the work of Black cowboys, Black cowgirls, and those carving out space in the horse industry is a labor of love we take seriously.

Thank you for cheering us on. Wishing you a joyful, festive season on the trail, in the saddle, and everywhere the season finds you. 🐎✨
