Thirty years ago, a wine representative from Alpena Beverage Company, Al Randall, visited Leelanau’s Wine and Food Festival and considered it a suitable event for the Sunrise Side. He proposed Harrisville as an ideal location due to its small-town charm,
landscapes, and community. Randall, representing various local businesses including Muehlbeck’s restaurant, presented the idea to the restaurant’s owner, Ilona Breitmeyer, who agreed to sponsor the event. With assistance from Leelanau’s Festival coordinator, the first Sunrise Side Wine and Food Festival took place in July of 1994. The festival coincided with the Harrisville Lake Trout Festival, sharing harbor space and tent. The group approached the Harrisville Chamber of Commerce for sponsorship of the liquor license. The Michigan Grape & Wine Industry Council provided startup funds through grants. The inaugural event featured participation from numerous wineries across the state and local restaurants serving signature dishes. Live music was organized by MaryAnn Hubbard, contributing to the event atmosphere. Over time, the Sunrise Side Wine and Food Festival became an established summer event in Harrisville. Following the Covid pandemic, the event included Michigan Craft Beer Brewers and was renamed The Sunrise Side Wine, Brew and Food Festival. This year’s 31st annual festival will take place on Saturday, July 12th from noon to 6:00 pm at the Harrisville Harbor, featuring Michigan wineries, breweries, local food and food trucks, music, and artisanal vendors. It is held annually on the 2nd Saturday in July.
