James Ogden, Assistant Professor of Scenic Design, recently published an article titled, “Focused Flow: How Brief Stillness Strengthens Creative Endurance,” which appears in the most recent edition of Theatre Design & Technology (Vol. 62, Issue 1), the flagship publication of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology.

In this piece, Ogden explores how meditation, often associated with spiritual or emotional wellbeing, can serve as a practical tool for enhancing creativity and productivity. He highlights how brief moments of stillness can support both immediate cognitive demands and long-term creative development, offering valuable insights for artists and educators alike.

“Meditation can provide a foundation for all creative practices and bring awareness to collaboration. Not a bad result for sitting still ten minutes at a time. “ - James

Congratulations, James!

Simon Marland, Assistant Professor of Sound Design at James Madison University, recently sound designed the production of APPROPRIATE by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Stephanie Sandberg.

“For the sound design, I endeavored to a balance the subtle sounds of the old (possibly haunted) house, the moments of tension as the siblings unearth their family’s past, and the constant drone of cicadas in the summer. This subtlety is punctuated with sharp contrasts in the scene breaks and supported by numerous tiny speakers hidden throughout the audience.” -Simon

New Views Theatre’s APPROPRIATE performs May 1-3 at the Johnson Theatre in the Lenfest Center for the Arts, Washington and Lee University, 100 Glasgow Street, Lexington, VA.

“There are so many talented actors in the room, including our genius playwright, and I feel lucky to learn from them. Being a part of an entirely female/nonbinary team has provided such a safe and encouraging space to put together this bold, satirical, and extremely topical work.” - Anjali
