Its Happening in Hardy
For those of you in the Hardy area, I will be giving a talk about Hardy's most famous and controversial early citizen for the Hardy History Association's Quarterly Meeting on Thursday, December 3 at 5:30 in the Old Hardy Gym. Full-sized flyer in comments.
Here's the blurb:
125 years ago, populist newspaper editor Winfield Scott Morgan was Hardy’s most famous resident. He was the People’s Party nominee for Governor in 1898 and Morgan’s Buzz-Saw once claimed 40,000 subscribers across the country.
Morgan’s career in populist politics spanned a time with many parallels to the present day: a volatile economy, a growing divide between the rich and poor, and a distrust of the major political parties. While Morgan’s path was singular, his life and times provide interesting food for thought for today.
John Treat is the owner of 3 Magi Antiques in Hardy’s historic Sullivan Building. Before coming to Hardy, he was the curriculum director at the University of Arkansas Honors College where he taught U.S. history and religious studies. A sixth-generation Arkansawyer, he holds a Ph.D. from the U of A, an M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School, and a B.A. from Lyon College in Batesville.
