Some music doesn’t just fill a space, it carries a place. We begin this year’s Summer Concert Series at Waimea Valley with , a Hawaiʻi-based collective whose sound is rooted in community, storytelling, and shared experience.

Blending reggae foundations with life in Hawaiʻi, The Vitals have built their music through collaboration and connection, from early releases like “Fake Lover” to their Hawaiian-language interpretation of Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain,” “Kali Ana Au.” Their work reflects both influence and intention, honoring where they come from and the voices they create alongside.

Join us in the valley on June 27th for an evening of live music, gathering, and aloha as we begin the series together.

These trees never truly leave Waimea… they begin again.

Our Wood Salvage Program is rooted in mālama ʻāina (care for the land), where trees removed for safety or ecological balance are thoughtfully transformed rather than lost. In this wahi pana (storied, sacred place), even what is taken carries forward meaning and purpose.

Our Conservation Manager Parker shares the story of wiliwili, a native tree connected to cultural practice, including its use in papa heʻe nalu (surfboards), reflecting the deep connection between forest, people, and ocean.

Did you know one of Hawaiʻi’s rarest native plants still grows in Waimea Valley?

For National Endangered Species Day, we honor the Nīoi (Eugenia koolauensis), a highly endangered native Hawaiian plant found only in the Koʻolau mountain range. Waimea Valley remains home to one of the few known wild populations of this precious species.

Through ongoing mālama ʻāina, our conservation team continues the careful work of propagating, monitoring and protecting Nioi from threats such as myrtle rust, habitat loss and invasive species — helping to ensure this native plant can continue to thrive in the valley it calls home.

By supporting places like Waimea Valley and sharing the importance of protecting native species, each of us can play a part in caring for Hawaiʻi’s living legacy.

Every path, plant, and space reflects the ongoing mālama and kuleana of our team, grounded in ʻike kūpuna and a commitment to stewarding this wahi pana. Our gardens are living expressions of aloha ʻāina, where nature, culture, and ʻike continue to grow together.
We are deeply honored to share that Waimea Valley received First Place in the Readers’ Choice Awards – Best of Oʻahu Island List for Botanical Gardens

Mahalo nui to everyone who voted and continues to support Waimea Valley. It is because of you that we are able to carry this work forward in service to ʻāina and our lāhui
