Grinnell Garage Sale Extravaganza Committee Announces City-Wide Garage Sale Dates

Bargains galore! Fun for all! Hundreds of visitors to our fair city! That is exactly what the newly formed Grinnell Garage Sale Committee promises with its first annual Garage Sale Extravaganza, a city-wide garage sale scheduled for May 31 and June 1, 2013.
The idea for a Grinnell-wide garage sale is the brainchild of committee members Bruce and Laura Blankenfeld, native Grinnellians and owners of Westside Family Restaurant in Grinnell, who wanted to create an event which would draw folks from all over the state of Iowa to Grinnell. The Blankenfelds shared their idea with several fellow Grinnellians, and the Garage Sale Extravaganza Committee was born!
“The mission of our committee is to make Grinnell a destination spot by offering homegrown, unique, family-friendly activities that will attract visitors to our city, and a garage sale extravaganza seemed to be a win/win for everybody,” said Karla Cornish, committee member and event coordinator.
Grinnell residents who wish to participate will organize their own garage sales and keep all of their own profits, but the Garage Sale Committee will keep a registry of all participants, create and distribute a city map with all of the sale locations identified, and handle advertising of the event through Facebook, print, and radio ads. A nominal charge of $5 per garage sale location will help to defray the cost of the advertising.
“Our idea is to kick-off garage sale season with this May/June sale and then close the season with a sale on Oct. 4th and 5th. This event in no way limits any future garage sale plans anyone might have. Participation in the city-wide sale is entirely voluntary. Our committee simply believes that by having a designated weekend for a huge sale, we will attract lots of out-of-town shoppers who will not only shop the sales, but who might then stay in town to enjoy shopping and eating at our local businesses. Everybody wins!” said Cornish.
Registration for the May 31st and June 1st Grinnell Garage Sale Extravaganza is easy! The committee needs your name, the address of the garage sale location, and your $5 registration fee mailed to 800 4th Ave., PMB Box #23, Grinnell, IA (Total Choice Shipping Building) by May 20 to guarantee inclusion in the garage sale map and advertising. Checks should be made payable to Grinnell Garage Sale Extravaganza.
