Sunday night, Dec 28,1952, seventy-three years ago, Hank Williams made his last personal appearance, performing at Montgomery's Elite Cafe for members of the local musicians' union. Here is a letter to the editor of the Montgomery newspaper about that evening, published ten days after Hank's death:
"To the average modern musician. . . and also to the serious musician. . . folk music or 'hillbilly' music is not to their taste. When Hank Williams played and sang to us at the Musicians' Party, Sunday, December 28, all of us, including the above two groups, were there. We listened attentively as if attending a concert by Benny Goodman or hearing the cultivated voice of some operatic star. We forgot our talent, technical skill and musical training; we truly enjoyed every note of song done by this capable artist.
This last appearance in his home town was not public and I only met him once, and had a few pleasant words with him. However, his magnetic personality -- plain and honest as it was -- will be a lasting memory to all who were present. His was a God-given talent projecting through him into his music and lyrics. They will last forever and be a glowing part of our American heritage.

This letter reveals that, even days before his death, Hank was capable of winning over an audience whose members were strongly inclined to look down upon his style of music. His talent burned brightly right up to the end. Hank's personality -- which we can still get a sense of through recorded live performances and interviews -- remained "magnetic" as well. And let's tip our hats to Tom Hewlett. He might have arrived at the Cafe a skeptic, but he left a convert who recognized the cultural significance of Hank's work and correctly predicted its enduring appeal.
