This month we present Saxophonist Carl Tosi playing some old favorites. You’ll swear you smell the sea breeze! Next time you’re in Sans Souci/Poe Mill area, try to imagine how it was here in the 1930-60s textile boom that made Greenville, “The Textile Capital of the World”. My Dad, Aunt and Grandmother lived in Poe Mill Village when my Dad was a kid. My Grandmother worked in the mills. On my Mom’s side, many of my Aunts and Uncles and my grandma also worked in the mills. It was a good thing to live and work for a textile mill at that time. The workers and families were tight knit. There were mainly lower middle class in these areas but it was better than where most of them came from, which was usually share cropping. I’m proud of my family for being so hard working to create a better life for themselves. I’m proud of this area. It’s seen some hard times since the mills closed. Crime ran rampant for a while once the workers moved away. Some remained though. The area is slowly coming back to its original glory. Historic homes and buildings are being preserved. New local small businesses are moving in. The roads were just reworked and paved. What an amazing history this corner of Greenvulle holds. If you don’t know much about Greenville’s past, just look it up. Educate yourself and you’ll see a whole other time in the past that meant so much to so many.
